Please can you help me decide how to extend/remodel

We want to extend our home, but just can't decide what to do.
The main issues are we have a small dining room we don't use because it's too cramped and the kitchen is really small. Have a great sized lounge at the back of the house.
Considering extending across the back, turning the lounge and kitchen into a kitchen diner. Getting rid of downstairs toilet and pantry and turning them and dining room into a lounge.
But..feel like the new lounge might be too small and will I regret not having a downstairs toilet? Also this seems like a lot of upheaval and I have 2 young children.
I don't think I want to have to move again as we love the location but the kitchen is just so small and there's not much more that can be done with the current layout.
Attached floor plan, would love to hear what other people thought.

Is your house a terraced house? Or detached/semi? Looks like it might be terraced as you have no widow on either side but makes a difference to what you can do if not. How big is your garden? How are the views out?
If you wanted to keep a downstairs loo (which I would with 2 small kids) but wanted to get rid of the one you have, it looks like your utility is a good size so could use some of that space? What are the room dimensions? Can't see on the plans...

I wouldn't get rid of the downstairs toilet unless you can move the location either under the stairs or utility.

Would the dining room be a suitable size for a "snug" cosy lounge or playroom, whilst turning the lounge and kitchen into a big open family kitchen, dining and living room? Do you use the study? Perhaps open up almost all of the downstairs except for the study on the left? Would you need to extend at all as it looks like a fair size house for only a family of 4.

It's a detached house. The study is currently a playroom.

I know what you mean, it should be enough space for a family of four. I think its just badly designed as so we don't use the space effectively.

Could probably fit a loo in the utility, this is a garage conversion previous owners did. So its the only space we have for stuff you'd normally keep in the garage.

I'm not sure on dimensions. I'll measure in the morning. I'm not sure how small is too small for a snug lounge. Feel as though as kids get older would we need more lounge or less?

The garden isn't very big but it backs onto fields so does feel like we've got plenty of space. The only thing that would make us move I think is if they built on the land behind.

if you don't work from home, I might sacrifice the study for this design

The old study becomes a downstairs loo (WC) + a big storeroom (S) for coats / sports gear / mess.

Then you can have a big lounge on the other side of the hall (L). And at the back, a combined kitchen (K) and dining room (D) with good connections to the garden.

If you do need the study, you could keep a tiny study at the front and still fit a downstairs loo in the utility room.

The suggestions from parietal are exactly what I was thinking 😃

Thanks. This looks like could work for the lounge. It all just feels so drastic moving so many walls! Now to find out how much it would cost.

If you didn't want to move so much, depending on the width of your existing dining room, it could be almost the same size as your existing lounge if you just move the loo up...
