Victorian semi

If you live in a Victorian semi, what's the sound like between the two houses. We are hoping to buy one but currently live in a detached. We have musical instruments and a young baby so am worried about being too noisy for the neighbour.

I lived in a semi and they were constantly banging in the wall so I guess they heard us! Me and two young kids (they had no kids). Really was difficult in the end as I felt I couldn't do anything (we were not particularly loud in my opinion).
I now live in a terrace house with a toddler next door and only occasionally hear him cry, on the other side our bathrooms adjoin so I hear the guy talking sometimes if I'm in there too. I hear him come down stairs - more feel it as he's a big man! I never hear her though (he's away a lot so no sound at all then).
I am conscious of making noise, especially as I've been renovating. I spoke to both sides before and one side (with toddler) are at work all day anyway and other side said it was to be expected and they hope to do their loft soon so it will be their turn then! I also have the tv down especially if watching late.
Good neighbours are essential and I've been lucky here.

Very early Victorian semi here. In four years we have never heard our neighbours. Save for when they were drilling into the wall and that was faint! Spoke with them in the garden about a year ago and they said they can never ever hear us either.

Walls are around a meter thick though!

I will never live in a semi again.

We had a 1920 one with joining living rooms. It was ok when we had a couple but then the sold and a family of five moved in and it was awful Could hear everything if I had no tv or music on.

We moved to a detached and I bloody love it!!!

The only way I'd do semi again is if it was stairs joining or perhaps kitchen but never relaxing type rooms.

@whenwillthemadnessend oh no. I think the neighbour is a retired couple. We simply can't afford detached in that area- they sell for over £900k so we have to compromise somewhere. The garden, house, off road parking etc are perfect. We used to live in a newbuild terrace and that wasn't too bad but I was really paranoid when my baby cried. Baby won't be a baby forever though

If the living rooms don't butt up it would be fine but if not and the old couple did move then maybe some
Sound proofing may be a good idea before decorating.

We are attached to a family with 3 kids aged 2-12. We can hear a bit of dull thud when the eldest practices her dance but that's it. We never hear voices, music or TV. They say they can occasionally hear our piano, but not to the point that it's an issue for them, and only if we play after the kids are in bed and they are in the room that adjoins our piano room.

And our living rooms ajoin!

1900 semi here.

I hear neighbours occasionally downstairs, my DD 15 hears their DD4 crying sometimes. God knows what they hear from us with a 16 yr old, 17 yr old and me and DH watching festivals on TV!

Living rooms aren’t next to one another, and they’re built into loft.

Gorgeous airy houses though. Love the space.
