How can I repair this dresser?

We have a gorgeous dresser (and matching drawers) that the previous owner kindly left behind for us as I fell in love with it but unfortunately the front has started peeling off ever since I spilt a glass of water.

Is there a way I can fix this? Something I can use? Is it a case of peeling it all off and then finding something else to front it with?

How can I repair this dresser?

Have you still got the pieces of veneer that have fallen off?

If so just use wood glue and reattach.

You might have to get creative pressing the pieces down until the glue's set.

Ah no I don't, they were so sharp (yet curled and fractured) so I threw them. DS keeps attempting to pick at it too 🤦‍♀️

I bought a set of crayons and felt tips in ‘wood’ colours from Amazon. They are excellent for touching up chips and small areas of missing veneer. Not expensive and worth a try to make the area less eye catching.

Do you think they'd be interested? I love that show but I'm not sure it's sentimental enough to me? Although the woman who left it us was wonderful and she sadly died not long after we bought the house from her. The dresser was her wedding present.

Hi @TwittleBee you can buy wood veneer sheets on eBay, perhaps you could send a sample piece and buy a sheet to recover the entire drawer?

As a first go I would sand v v v v lightly & see if you can get some woodstain the same colour and paint it on really carefully. You may need to get two colours and blend them or copy whatever grain there is. Otherwise the wood veneer / sheets sounds good.

A left field mad idea could you get some shoe polish the same colour and just rub it in - it won't look perfect but the peeled off bit won't look so obtrusive ( I did this once with a dark old picture frame )
