Any suggestions for areas to look at? DH is from Frome. We have 3 young (under 2.5) children. Town rather than village because I am terrible at parking/ would like to be able to walk to things…

Depends on your budget and how close to Frome you need to be.

Parking gets a lot easier with practice.

MrsCremuel · 10/01/2022 18:56

Wells?

Rrrob · 10/01/2022 19:50

We are 3 hours away at the moment so within 30 mins would be ideal.

Budget….up to £800k for a really perfect place.

And yes I need to practice parking!! Was just regaining my confidence when I bumped our less-than-a-week-old car in a car park last week. Oops…

@MrsCremuel Wells looks good, thanks!

Everyone wants to move to frome! I'm in North Somerset on the coast, we have allocated parking and can walk everywhere/bus to Bristol

Rrrob · 10/01/2022 20:05

@gogohm don’t want to be in frome…I want to find our own place (DH knows everyone there!!)

With that budget I'd look at the outskirts of Bath. Some lovely areas, easy to get into Bath or Bristol or Frome or Stroud or even to London. Best of all worlds. I live a bit further out, closer to Bath than Bristol but go to Bristol more - on the bus!

Bradford on Avon or Wells but both are more expensive than Frome.

Taking what you get for your money on houses into account then to be honest the best place I can think of which is within 30 mins of Frome is actually Frome.

Fuckitydoodah · 10/01/2022 20:22

Warminster - you'd get a lot for your money. 20min drive to frome. Train station - 2 hours to London, hour to Bristol. Plenty of lovely green spaces nearby and a large park in town. The town centre and shops aren't quite as quirky as Frome, but has everything you would need.

Or
Shepton Mallet
Bruton
Wincanton

I'd avoid Westbury or Trowbridge

Bradford on Avon?

Chippenham? Some of the surrounding villages are lovely but you’d need to drive.

Devizes?

Chippenham and Devizes are just over 30 minutes to Frome though really.

Rrrob · 10/01/2022 20:47

Thanks for the suggestions!!
What’s Chippenham town centre like these days @sidge? We looked at some houses there about 5 years ago that were lovely but the town was a bit..lacking.

Any thoughts on Corsham?

Keynsham. Midway between Bristol and Bath. It has bus links to both cities as well as to Bristol Airport. It also has a railway station.

Toomuchtoodo · 10/01/2022 20:52

Tisbury is very nice and has a mainline station but may be too far from Somerset boarder for you.

Sidge · 10/01/2022 20:58

@Rrrob it’s not the prettiest town but it’s got the basics. Nothing big, chic or quirky though but it has the day to day stuff. Also a few nice restaurants, cafes and pubs.

Chippenham is nothing special, Corsham is pretty. Devizes is lovely and bigger than Corsham

Bradford-Upon-Avon is very pretty but nowhere near as interesting as Frome or Bath. I guess ultimately it's about what you want from an area but I would get very bored by the pubs, shops and cafes in B-U-A.
