Initially we thoght hob, but now the builders said that sink will be more straight forward.

is it practical to have a sink? or is it better to have sink and a hob in a run against the wall

Don’t put the sink on the island
It’ll be a mess
Both on a run against the wall is better IMO

Wotsitsits · 10/01/2022 17:49

Both against the wall!!!!!

TobyHouseMan · 10/01/2022 17:50

We have a 1/2 sink on our island but we also have a full sink on the side. This works very well as food prep on the island is a joy (it has a waste disposal unit too). But if the Island sink was the only one it would be a real pain. I'd say only do it if you have another.

I have hobs and sinks in my islands - I think it depends on how wide they are - for us it works great particularly as one is a prep sink. Personally I prefer the hob against the wall I don't really like cooking when someone is at the breakfast bar but it's just a matter of preference

Sink on island is a terrible idea. All the kitchen designers I spoke to said it will always be messy. We have our hob on the island and it works really well. We have one with an extraction fan built in so no hood overhead. Also who cares about what the builder thinks is easier - you are the client and you get what you want.

pasok1000 · 10/01/2022 18:28

how much is extractor built into the hob?

Well you can get different brands! We have a bora one (£3000 when we had it installed)

https://www.bora.com/gb/gb/

But you can get much less expensive ones

(https://appliancepeople.co.uk/products/elica-nikolatesla-fit-72cm-air-venting-induction-hob?currency=GBP&variant=39404486295623&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0LeD--qn9QIVxYFQBh2NWw1EAQYAiABEgLDDD_BwE as an example)

Probably less than that too if you look around. You have to remember it means you don't but an extractor hood at all so they will be more expensive than a straight forward hob.

Clear island, possibly a prep sink, and main sink and hob on the run.
If space is an issue then I would go with a hob,

JustJam4Tea · 10/01/2022 19:37

We’ve got a neff downdraught hob. The gubbins underneath takes up space in the island, not much, and we had to have a duct installed under the screed in the floor. We got one made out of metal.

I think a sink would look messy. Wish we’d got a small prep sink though…

Henlie · 10/01/2022 20:08

We have a small prep sink at one end of the island (opposite the fridge), then a hob at the other (opposite eye height twin ovens). Main sink is against a wall, under a window - and next to the dishwasher. This set up works really well for us.

I would steer clear of the extractors that pop up from the island. We have one which is broken. The guy who came out to look at it said they’re nothing but trouble. Really, really expensive if and when they go wrong 😩. We didn’t install our kitchen, was put in by previous owners. I would do an overhead one if doing again.

whyohwhyohwhyohwhywhy · 10/01/2022 20:33

Does a hob need to be on an outside wall for the extractor to work?

GrazingSheep · 10/01/2022 21:19

We have a hob with integrated extractor
It vents at the bottom of the unit - not to an external wall

Africa2go · 10/01/2022 22:09

I think it depends on how you live / cook / entertain guests. We had a choice of sink or hob on the island, opted for sink. Didnt want one of those pop up extractors (had been warned they werent particularly efficient) and didnt want a ceiling mounted one to obscure sightline. On top of that, personally I can't think of anything worse than cooking on the island whilst guests are sitting there & didn't feel safe with children trying to do homework etc.

Ours is never messy, we're quite tidy / minimalist so don't have anything on the island (no draining grooves etc). Its quite a deep sink so if we do have something that can't go in the dishwasher and that cant be washed up straight away (most things are) you cant see it usually. It helps that we have quite a big island and its offset to one side. 4 yrs later, i wouldnt change it and it works for how we live.

Extrabreit · 10/01/2022 22:20

Sink in island every time . Where do you prep meals… washing, peeling, rinsing utensils etc as you go? Beside the sink. And prep/ cleaning up is 90% of cooking. So why put spend all day doing that while looking at a blank wall, when you can put sink in the island , and stand facing into the rest of the action in the kitchen ? ( but put in a deep ( double?) sink to hide clutter, or 2 dishwashers ).

eurochick · 10/01/2022 22:24

We've just bought a house with ban island sink. I hate it. It looks so messy. It makes most of the island unusable by the time you have a few things on the draining board. In our last house we had a huge plain island that was used for all the food prep. That was much, much better.

Peridot1 · 10/01/2022 22:24

We had hob in island in last kitchen. Had it previous rented house too and liked how it worked.

Sink was in front of window so not staring at a wall.

We had a flush to ceiling extractor fan. From Neff.
