Love my house but not the street

I'd be keen to hear people's experiences. I bought my home a year ago and really love it. Unfortunately soon after lockdown eased, I realised the street is awful because of two nearby households - there's often loud shouting, thudding music and they drive the noisiest cars which disrupts sleep at 5.30 every morning. It's become disheartening to be here. Would you stick it out and hope things change?

No.
It will all get very wearing and start damaging your MH.
You will soon find that your shoulders up by your ears when you hear the slightest sound, waiting for their disturbance.
It’s not worth it.

I won’t ever put myself through that again.

No, I've done it once with one bad neighbour and that was awful, two would be unbearable. These people don't seem to change; I moved on as soon as I reasonably could. Don't underestimate the effect this can have on your mental health, its horrible feeling a prisoner to other peoples noise in your own home. If its viable to move on I'd be making plans to do so, life really is too short.

Similar here. Looks like they're moving though. I slept properly for the first time in a year. Horrible situation.

Nope, I’d cut my losses as soon as it was possible. Nothing worse than loving your house but your heart sinking when you get home because you’re wondering what your neighbors will do next.

Thanks for your replies. It's such a shame when this happens to people. It's also mentally exhausting.
Is it worthwhile doing any large jobs in the house when I know I want to move on? It needs decorating throughout but it's a lot for myself and I don't even know if it adds value.

I would only do what adds value or what gets you a good or fast sale. Can you not move your bedroom to the back? Would that help? New windows to block the noise? I think I would probably decorate but not put in a new kitchen etc.

You have my sympathies OP, it is mentally exhausting indeed. My feeling is that decorating can help a property to shift quickly, but won't necessarily increase value. Unless a property is in a really bad way you rarely need to redecorate the whole thing to put it on the market. Is the property clean and presentable? I'd focus on making the property immaculately clean and de-cluttering. If you are going to do any decorating I'd focus on things that are most pressing, the room where paint is peeling or wallpaper ripped, that sort of thing.

I'd sell up and move as soon as I could in your situation. When I bought my first flat, it was in a converted Victorian house, there were 3 other fats all rented to the council.

The tenants in those flats made my life a misery, contrast blaring loud music, always shouting and thudding across the upper flats. They threw all sorts of junk, like sofas, baths, toilets, mattresses etc in the front garden, which my ground floor flat looked out onto. They also kept piling rubbish bags in the communal area. It made me so miserable I ended up selling at a loss just to get away. Never again.

Are they in social housing? Because you can complain (even anonymously) to the council if they are, and that can really help.

If they're privately owned, complain to environmental health.

Move, we once bought a brand new home in a 'regeneration area' the house was beautiful but the surrounding area was awful. We lasted nearly 3 years and I was at breaking point by the time we left.
Do you have a mortgage on your house, check that you can port it to a new property or check for any penalties.
