Some Sunday Rightmove entertainment. If you could spend up to 1 million, and it didn’t particularly matter where you had to be in the UK - where would you live?

I would buy land with planning permission and build a small eco home.

ABCDEF1234 · 09/01/2022 19:27

This! Yes the house needs some work but that view/location can not be beaten www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/112660964#/?channel=RES_BUY

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 09/01/2022 19:29

I could buy my house plus the 4 on each side of it. Grin

Or I might buy my parents house and turn it into a doggy Funland.

Yesthatscorrect · 09/01/2022 19:40

I'd probably buy this absolutely gorgeous house next to a beautiful river and within walking distance of the Northumberland hills and a lovely village so the kids don't have to change schools. I found this property on the Rightmove Android app and wanted you to see it: www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/110572931

RedHot22 · 09/01/2022 19:43

I would stay exactly where I am!
Could I buy a small coastal cottage instead?

This house sold in 2019 for 510k and they have done very little since buying it

GnomeDePlume · 09/01/2022 20:58

I would have this:

I would spend the change on developing the garden.

Yesthatscorrect · 09/01/2022 22:01

@ABCDEF1234 yes I don't think they'll get the asking price. It really is in a beautiful location. I'd pay 750k for it.

StinkyBumFartyBaby · 09/01/2022 22:04

I'd buy the house in currently renting.

Ruralbliss · 10/01/2022 21:56

Edinburgh! I'm hoping to relocate there in 5 -8 years from now from the Shires when my youngest has left school or university.

Off Portobello beach

Or more central

with my fantasy budget of £1million.

In reality it'll be a downshift in size for my actual money.

Camomila · 11/01/2022 06:30

About 5 mins up the road in one of the big Victorian Houses.

emmathedilemma · 11/01/2022 10:49

I reckon i have contender for most under-whelming property although at least you've got some change from your million for renovations! www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/111675458#/?channel=RES_BUY

Sadly this one is under offer and might have gone over the million or I could have been tempted ;)

onlychildhamster · 11/01/2022 13:25

@emmathedilemma haha i disagree :) my example was a 3 bed flat in Muswell Hill which is a suburban area in north london though it is very popular now as it was one of the frontrunners in the Times' ranking for best places to live. In London, its generally 'pay or pray' for secondary school, and there are few grammar schools; but Muswell Hill has 2 Outstanding comprehensives beloved by the MC, Fortismere and Alexandra Park (neither are religious).

It is not central at all! But the thing, the only places I can think of in central london with outstanding state schools (esp at secondary level) would be places like Holland Park and you need way more than a million for a 3 bed flat. And of course a house near Muswell Hill Broadway with the same kind of square footage as the flat (over 140 sq m) would be well in excess of a million! Most small Victorian terraces (3 bed with a box room/loft conversion) would be closer to 100 sq m.

LaBellina · 11/01/2022 13:28

Somewhere in Cornwall, preferably a very old cottage.

FurierTransform · 11/01/2022 20:22

I'd get somewhere on the coast, outside of the south/south east so I actually got something that felt every penny of 1million rather than an ex factory terrace. Maybe Wales or the east of England.

@StrifeOfBath

My choice would be London, so take a deep breath and stand back if you feel the urge to recoil in Price Horror… but this would be a contender for me: www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/115639703#/?channel=RES_BUY

Steps away from a brilliant park with Lido and gym, walking distance to 2 cinemas, to the trendy little centre of H Hill with its farmers market, good bakery, artisan ice cream, niche shops, bars cafes and restaurants. Walkable to Brixton, I love Brixton. Good public transport. Good community feel in the area. The garden is a mess but the price looks negotiable (hasn’t been snapped up) and I would have enough to move the bathroom upstairs, do a loft conversion with shower room, and sort out the garden.

I have actually considered that place! But it needs to much work which makes it too expensive.
MmeD · 12/01/2022 14:41

I’d stay in my house but buy the two fields next door, and transform them into woods, a formal garden, a kitchen garden, a walled secret garden and a huge swimming pond.
