What (if any) compromises did you make for the right home?

I'm just curious really, I've been watching old Escape to the Country episodes and it's funny how people are willing to compromise once they find a home that feels right. We were the same, we wanted a garage and a big hallway and in the end went for a house with neither! If you don't mind me asking, what did you compromise on? Do you think you made the right decision?

This thread has been really interesting.

It took us years to find our house and I love it so much 😊

No driveway. Thankfully the garden wraps around the house so we knocked down part of the front wall and turned the side garden into a drive. It's a very weirdly set up house and land so a few things needed changing.

Small bathrooms.

We didn't compromise on anything because the list we had just said "house"!

We had lived in a flat and I was struggling with SPD and a young baby. Only second floor (top) but it was hard going.

So our list just said "house" and that's what we got.

DH knew immediately the house was right. I didn't. However we've been here 15 years and I love it.

House now slightly too small with 2 DC and I'd love a downstairs bathroom but it will suit us forever really.

Off road parking for 2 cars. Could build a mahoosive extension (but will require a lottery win!) and has a good sized garden. It's North facing but somehow gets the sun all day. Very windy though.

We went into negative equity just after we bought it. Bought it at the height of the market just before the banking crash. Didn't have a repayment mortgage until 2015 but time has dealt with the extremes of the mortgage and we now have around £100,000 of equity in the property (blows my mind how that has happened!)

It'll be a great house for any grandchildren to visit (if we have any) and our neighbours (who have been here since the houses were built) are in their 70s and still loving it so I think it really is a home for a long, long time.

@Movinghouseatlast - I once went to see an old rectory - utterly beautiful - but my goodness a money pit- But dining hall - study , drawing room , dining room , morning room , huge kitchen , 5 bedrooms , stables and dovecote. A drive to get a pint of milk. Gorgeous but even the thought of fixing the roof made me nervous - it needed at least the cost of the house spending on it as well ( & I have done up houses before so not the most nervous person )

Went for 3 bed terrace but I can walk to everything - never regretted it.
