Is £15K good for plastic sash windows?

Hello, I'm planning to change all seven windows in my Victorian terraced house in London with UPVC sash windows. I've been quoted £17,000 by Everest and £15,000 by Anglian. Is this a good deal?

I was quoted 18k by Everest which was going to be reduced to 15k if I signed on the line there and then. I told them to get lost and got them from a local firm for 9k.
This company quickslide only provided (link below) windows and you needed to get a local fitter when I needed sash windows. I see they now have a fitter network so might work out more reasonable.
You will need to get a FENSA cert for building control or for reselling.

We got a quote for our bay window from Everest (so one window but a big one). Just plain white pvc. They originally quoted us £10k but phoned their supervisor while they were still in the house and managed to get it down to £8k.

Lol.

We got straight forward quote from an independent window fitter, no pissing about with selling tricks and flannel and had it done for £2k, and they were sash windows as well, instead of the plain top openers that Everest tried to flog at inflated prices.

Moral of the story; use an independent window fitter.

Not in London and this was a few years ago, but Everest quoted me £8k for some work that a local firm did for £3400 (excellent work and a long-established company with good reputation).

I'd look on Yell.com or similar for a good local alternative.

MintJulia · 07/01/2022 13:43

That sounds very expensive OP. I strongly suggest you get a couple of quotes from small independents. The larger companies usually charge at least twice as much, and for worse service.

Viviennemary · 07/01/2022 13:45

Go with a local firm. They will probably be cheaper. I prefer a proper quote. Not this haggling down to a fifth of the price.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 07/01/2022 16:09

It is very expensive. I had 11 pvc sash windows done last year, a set of crittal type french doors and a bathroom window for just shy of 10k.

Try MB glass / windows or Benbrook.....no silly hard sell or discount nonsense....lower prices than big companies....you get a quote and decide...no pushing...have used them myself.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 07/01/2022 16:33

You'll probably pay half of what they originally quoted you if you go to a good local company.

McGintyii · 07/01/2022 16:40

I work in the industry, Quickslide would do supply only at a fraction of those prices, you would just need to get your own installer that's all as pp says.

The big ones like Everest and Anglian are notoriously expensive for an inferior product. They just do the usual sales patter to get their sales, it's criminal really. Also Everest went bust owing millions and then reopened the day after as Everest 2020. All the guarantees that were with Everest are now worthless, what's to stop them doing the same again.

I'll add my recommendation for Masterframe, as mentioned above.

I have their Heritage range and I love them. I replaced a mixture of aluminium and cheap uPVC so didn't feel a sense of obligation to use wood.

MummyMe87 · 07/01/2022 17:00

We paid £1000 per window in 2016 with GHI windows in south london

NightmareSlashDelightful · 07/01/2022 17:03

Seems unreal to me, the sash windows in my flat would be twelve grand each to replace (Georgian flat, Edinburgh, though).

But this is absolutely one of those 'ask locally' situations, you need recommendations from people who've actually had the work done ideally.

Tal45 · 07/01/2022 17:10

Go and knock on the door of someone's you really like. That's what we did and it worked out really well.

Actually that's a good point, I was told when I bought my current property that the guarantee cert for the windows was missing. When I asked why it had not been chased up I was told that these things aren't worth the paper they're written on as DG companies often close and re-open under another name, so the old guarantees are no longer valid. A well-established local company or independent fitter and no expectation of a guarantee seems like a better way.

Hello folks, thought I'd give you all an update:

A neighbour recommended a company called London Sash Windows Ltd, who came round on the same day of enquiry and have quoted me £10,000 for sash windows across the entire house (9 windows). Their sash windows are absolutely stunning, and the fee includes installation and removal of existing windows.

I did a lot of research and found the best upvc sashes are Ultimate Rose. Two windows cost me 3K including vat and installation. I’m pleased with them. They claim to have the slimmest upvc sections so they look better than many others

I've not heard of them, could it have been Sash Windows London Ltd by any chance? If so you'll get a brilliant product and great service Smile
