Should my new extractor fan be so draughty?

So I have a new extractor fan in my bathroom and since it was put in the bathroom feels chilly. I realise it's there to ventilate, but really I would prefer it just did so when I need it to! It just seems to let in air all day. It also clatters a lot when it is windy which annoys me. (Quiet enough when actually on.) It is on the westerly side of the house so does bear the brunt of wind and rain I guess, is there anything I can do to reduce how much wind seems to get in??

Is there a guard/shield on the outside of the wall to stop some of the wind?

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 06/01/2022 16:23

we don't have one, but the neighbour has one and it had a cowling/cover on it, that sort of looks like a mini jet engine...so i suppose it vents out and this polo sort of shape prevents any backdraught

Flustered4 · 06/01/2022 16:25

Hmm yes that seems obvious now you both say that! No it doesn't have any protection outside, will get onto the bloke that installed it! (Should he have put something externally as standard??)

It needs a shutter grill on the outside and a 1-way non return flap in the ducting.
I am shocked these weren't fitted by the installer.

CasperGutman · 06/01/2022 18:32

It probably does have some kind of non-return flap in the duct - that's usually what causes the clattering the OP describes. It doesn't sound like it's working very effectively though!

Dougieowner · 06/01/2022 19:15

Usually it is the external louvres that can rattle, the internal non-return flap (the ones I use anyway) are softly sprung and make no noise.

PigletJohn · 06/01/2022 19:53

For the outside, I recommend a Cowl Vent. It has one big flap under the weather cover and rattles less than the sort that look like a Venetian blind. In the duct you can have a butterfly shutter, made of softer and very thin plastic, and very quiet.

Can you post pics of what you have?

We’ve installed one of these which includes backdraft shutters.

We also replaced the ducting ( basic flexible white thin stuff ) with insulated version.

Expensive , but we had a couple of vents in the loft to do.

We have got a similar issue. An extractor fan vent is letting tons of cold in.
We can't easily access the outside of the vent as it's too high up.
Can we retrofit a different cover which closes automatically when not in use? Are the front vent units universal?

tanstaafl · 22/11/2024 20:26

You can buy the circular ceiling vents that’ll screw closed when not needed.
You can also buy the flappy closing vents for internal use ( add them into the ducting in the loft )
Finally, you can buy insulated ducting to reduce condensation forming when the warm moist air hits the cold loft space.
We’ve got all three, added over time.

If you’re in the UK have a look on the Screwfix website ( .com )

Show us a picture of what you've got, inside and out.

Who fitted it, and what do you think they would charge to come back and fit a cowl vent?

fleapithome · 23/11/2024 17:17

Thank you! I'll post a picture shortly but can only do inside as outside is too high up.
The fitters have long gone as it was a few years ago and the builder is no longer around.
