Bare floorboards v carpet in bedrooms

I recently renovated my small Victorian terrace. Upstairs we kept the original floorboards. I am not keep on carpets and have some small rugs. But now I am thinking of putting carpet in two of the bedrooms to make them more cozy. Will that look odd?

I don’t think it would look odd at all. Carpets do make rooms cosier and you want a cosy bedroom.

Or you could do a massive rug just leaving a foot of floorboards visible all round the edges of the room if you like that look and want a compromise (if your floorboards aren’t too draughty, you could presumably caulk them with something if the are).

Thanks. Yes, the main issue for me is gaps in the floorboards, which were too hard to fix. I do have a very large rug in one bedroom but might go with the carpet option in the other bedrooms.

Have you tried stuffing the gaps with something (called caulking I believe)?

Perhaps someone on here will have tips that could help? Bumping for you.

I would recommend getting wood coloured sealant from Amazon. You can choose from a variety of colours and use this to fill in the gaps.

Alternatively, neutral cosy carpets will never look odd in bedrooms. Choose a decent underlay.

My house has raised floors and I think we need rugs on top of the carpet to keep the heat in Sad

I’m an architect and I always recommend underfloor heating - probably because my own house is chilly

Thanks. We did explore using gap sealant but for some reason it wasn’t a viable option. I do have underfloor heating downstairs and it is lovely!

I had laminate on all the floors in my house when we moved in. I lasted a month before I changed the hallway and the bedroom. Hate the tapping of the feet and the coldness.

Now I’m in my room and I am all snug. Saving up for carpet in the other rooms

My house is all wooden floors except 2 of the bedrooms. It looks lovely and not out of place at all.

I have wood floors everywhere except my bedroom, and it doesn't look weird, I'd had wooden floors in bedrooms before and didn't like it, unless was hoovering everyday in there I found my feet would pick up any dirt off the floor and get into the bed and it was so annoying! Children's rooms have the wood because felt like it would have been more practical for them if doing any arts etc in their rooms but they never have done so looking to cover with carpet to make it cosier.

I have to say though, I put in the wooden floors and if I'd restored originals I would be very loathed to cover them!

We have wood floors throughout and carpet in the 2 bedrooms and I think it looks fine. Could you do a carpet runner up the stairs then carpet starting on the first floor from the stairs. So it would be hallway and bedrooms?

Notcontent · 06/01/2022 14:52

Thanks for all the thoughts and comments! I do have a runner on the stairs (stairs would be too noisy otherwise) so hopefully it will all blend in. I think the problem with original floorboards in many houses is that they were not great quality in the first place. I have seen some beautiful original floor boards in Europe, in particular, but mine are nothing like that…

We had some quite large gaps (some over 1cm) between upstairs floorboards filled with a silicone sealer, which moves with the floorboards so it doesn't crack. I would thoroughly recommend.

You could also try two runners down either sides of the bed, so that you aren't stepping out of bed onto a cold floor if that is what bothers you.

Get good quality underlay.
I like the look of floorboards but find in bedrooms carpet is cosier. Plus better for noise!
