East facing kitchen white paint help

Hi, could I get some advice on which white for a large, airy, bright East facing kitchen, that will be used all through the day. The room is a modern extension to a 1929 house with a vaulted ceiling. It has a large sliding door and 2 large roof lights. The kitchen is dark blue with brass handles. I prefer warmer whites. I have tested wimbourne white, all white (f&b), timeless and white cotton (dulux).

The adjoining room is going to be painted green smoke and the living room (leading on from diner and west facing), will be painted hague blue. I'll try and post a pic. Thanks 😅

I've always gone with easy to wipe clean and re touch paints as my family manage to splodge any posh painted walls before the painter has even submitted his invoice to me . One day I will have a farrow and ball house ( as long as the kids don't reproduce )

Policyschmolicy · 05/01/2022 19:32

We have shadow white in our hallway. It’s not white at all but it’s a beautiful soft colour that changes with different lights. It would go well with the colours you are planning (in fact F&B describe it as a good linking colour)

Policyschmolicy · 05/01/2022 19:34

And even though F&B describe it as white with a hint of grey I’ve never seen it look grey in our house. Sometimes greenish, sometimes warm with yellow undertones, sometimes taupe

I’m a fan of F&B but not sure I’d put it in my kitchen again. I have a rental flat with East facing kitchen which I’ve painted in Dulux trade pure brilliant white diamond eggshell. Sounds quite brutal but it looks good, clean and bright.

Wimborne White sounds good with your other colours. Make sure you get modern emulsion. I have that throughout the house and it means you don't have to faint every time a chocolatey little hand grabs the wall.

Nyfluff · 05/01/2022 22:34

Sail white (Dulux) is nice in an east facing room, it's a chalky just off white with a bit of depth.

Womanbearpig · 05/01/2022 22:46

Thanks so much for the replies.

I think wimbourne white looked a bit too yellow over the white mist coat, but I've heard it looks good once you've painted the whole wall.

Shadow white sounds like a lovely colour, but a little too elusive if it keeps shifting tone?

I will check out sail white. This may be what I'm looking for!

I don't think my budget will stretch to farrow and ball tbh. If I do decide on a f&b colour, I'll get it colour matched at a johnstone's centre in covaplus.

I've heard good things about johnstone's trade standard white paint from other threads on mumsnet. It sounds like a soft pure white that may be suitable for my type of modern extension. I just don't want it too stark. Anyone have experience of this?

Hmmm maybe I haven’t explained so well - I love that it shifts tone, it’s different depending on the time of the day and what’s around it. It’s truly magic paint. Ours is in an east facing hallway so at times has bright golden sunlight streaming in (very large period glass double doors), or at other times has very grey light, and everything in between. It’s a gorgeous colour and we chose it by accident really - day before lockdown 1 we had to choose something before the shops all shut. Ours is actually colour matched into dulux diamond matt.

In the kitchen and dining area though we have always gone for Little Greene’s intelligent matt emulsion. It’s completely bombproof to the point that I don’t have tiles behind my hob and it’s good as new 2 years later!

I have Johnstone's Trade paint in an almost white shade. I think it's called New Chalk. It looks white but just a little softer.

mimos4 · 06/01/2022 09:32

If Wimborne is too yellow, try School House White. Wimborne seemed too yellow for our house, and I went for SHW. It's beautiful - very soft and warm.

bravotango · 06/01/2022 11:05

I also have Shadow White and really rate it! However as PP says it can have a sort of sage tinge in certain lights which might not work with your cupboards. There's an instagram account called the house that black built and she uses Rustoleum Steamed Milk everywhere - it seems to be ever so slightly warmer than brilliant white and that might work!

NotDonna · 06/01/2022 13:32

School House White (F&B) is lovely. It’s paler than shadow white and shaded white. It’s the perfect white for our SouthEast facing kitchen. There’s no grey or yellow tones but every so slightly warm. I’m also a fan of Wimbourne but I know what you mean by being slightly yellow. We use Johnstone paints colour matched to F&B colours.

Little Greene Slaked Lime in intelligent Matt emulsion.

Womanbearpig · 07/01/2022 17:38

Thank you so much for all these replies. It's been really helpful. In the end, I got johnstone's to make me up a tester pot of half strength wimbourne white and it looks great. Although my SO struggled to see the difference at first 😂

I have another question about studio green, but I suppose I should really post a separate thread.

School house white and timeless are such a beautiful colours, but in the end I like the luminosity of wimbourne white to brighten up the space
