Upstairs laundry room

Tell me about your upstairs laundry rooms - how do you sound proof it?
What about leaks/flooding (my main worry)?
Have you managed to fit a drying area if the room is walk-in cupboard size?
Do you have an extractor fan/.dehumidifier built in?

Would anyone be happy to share photos of their small laundry rooms so I can see layouts? I have checked out Pinterest & googled.

TIA

@whatisheupto

People saying its a hassle to take laundry out in the summer makes absolutely no sense to me. You're doing exactly the same amount of legwork you would if your laundry were downstairs. Washing is already upstairs by default so you're going downstairs once to take washing outside (which you would have to do if you were carrying washing down to machine) then upstairs once to bring dry washing in (which you would do anyway).
I probably put the laundry outside for a small % of the year. Vast majority of the time it’s indoors so that aspect would be of little advantage to me. Majority of the year I wouldn’t be able to put the laundry out before going to work as it would either still be damp, as the weather is cold/ damp or soaked as it would have rained at some point in the day.

It may better suit those, such as PP’s neighbour, who puts laundry out almost whatever the weather.

I still miss mine! We did live in a new build where the infrastructure was mainly concrete so never suffered from noise or vibrations. The laundry basket and ironing board lived in there and you could just shut the door. neighbours of ours put a laundry sink in. It was fabulous that there was no need to carry washing about the house unless it was a sunny day and we decided to hang it outside. Nowadays we live a 4 storey town house where the washing machine is in the basement garage. I hate it and want to move to a bungalow/apartment.

If you're adding a whole laundry room to a house, I would 100% get a Tumble dryer. Also I would consider drying outside more often, it doesn't have to be warm to dry washing, just dry and breezy. I dry outdoors from march to November usually, then finish anything off that's not 100% dry in the airer or a quick blast in the dryer. I would also buy a big airer for indoors. My washing is dry in a day during winter when heating is on and also use a dehumidifier. Airer is like this...www.argos.co.uk/product/8500368?istCompanyId=a74d8886-5df9-4baa-b776-166b3bf9111c&istFeedId=30f62ea9-9626-4cac-97c8-9ff3921f8558&istItemId=ixitixixt&istBid=t&&cmpid=GS001&_$ja=tsid:59130%7cacid:289-152-2757%7ccid:599609992%7cagid:24126986217%7ctid:aud-637918675102:pla-845620099165%7ccrid:94168542777%7cnw:g%7crnd:1575531426796755164%7cdvc:m%7cadp:%7cmt:%7cloc:9046849&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=599609992&utm_term=&utm_content=shopping&utm_custom1=24126986217&utm_custom2=289-152-2757&GPDP=true&gclid=Cj0KCQiAw9qOBhC-ARIsAG-rdn4LsbPoond6d8taM8i11lhyOx-RmheZ-fXzmNvg_RvhEhhWQqsZFOUaAmCWEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

I would love to dry outdoors more often but working full time means I like to simply my day as much as possible and coming home from work and having soggier clothes or still damp clothes that then need to be tumble dried is a job too many for me.
I do take your point re: tumble drier, which would be particularly useful for bed linen and towels, which may take longer to dry than clothes

@HalloHello - yes to a dehumidifier, we use one and it’s great. Clothes dry fast on the radiators and airer with the dehumidifier on

An upstairs laundry room is on my wishlist for my dream home. I would absolutely love it!

Chimley · 07/01/2022 20:56

I have a downstairs one but would certainly have an upstairs one.

I have a heated towel rail and a humidistat. So it acts as its own airing cupboard. I do also have a condenser tumble dryer so can hang clothes on hangers on my drying rail whilst the tumble dryable stuff dries and the combined heat with the humidistat means it's all dry by the end of the day.

I love mine. Its a converted loo and much more useful as a laundry room.
I dont have a drier in there but have a pulley maid in the landing (very high ceilings), which is super practical.
I bought a quiet Bosch machine and its not a bother (might be less ideal if you have very young kids).
Much prefer it to downstairs laundry rooms which I have had before.
