I am attaching the draft of a plan.

Please could you share your thoughts ( I marked where entry is too)

my questions/ uncertainties:

  1. Pantry cupboard ( 60 cm width) or Pull out Cargo 40 cm and 20?1A 2. any glass doors on wall cabinets or under the iceland?
  2. pieces - where and what kind of unit?
  3. overhang on iceland - 20 or 30 cm?
  4. what kind of bar stools?

Thank you

that image is tiny & hard to read (and appears rotated on my laptop). post a better picture to get more comments.

  1. Pull outs are very useful but consider what you’ll store & if you need a 60cm width for large items.
  2. A few glass doors on high wall cabinets with lighting maybe. Definitely not glass under the island. In fact I choose as many drawers as possible under the island rather than cupboards.
  3. I’ve no idea what you mean by ‘pieces’
  4. By overhang do you mean for the breakfast bar, as in over the island? If so it depends on a few factors such as the space behind the bar stools, depth of your cabinets under the ‘hang’ and the width availability of your worktop. You want the largest overhang possible to allow for your knees etc when seated. Our islands have all had 40-50cm overhang.
  5. Whatever style you fancy but check the height as they vary.

Are you having handles on your base unit doors? If so the dishwasher will hit the door handle of the cupboard beneath your sink. A sink in the corner is a little odd too and would be better further along the wall. Having the sink and dishwasher right in the corner means you can’t access that corner space easily unless you’ve found a corner unit that can take a sink & pull out corner baskets? The dishwasher is usually next to the sink to help with plumbing. It’s also unusual to have a fridge next to an oven & hob next to a sink but not sure the rationale. The appliances need moving.
Could you put the hob on the island (ours is an induction hob & on the island) or the sink & dishwasher (we had that combo in the island at our previous house) each time facing out the window. If you had a 90cm hob you could have large pan drawers below and then 45cm drawers/cupboards either side OR a 60cm basin in the centre with 60cm dishwasher to the side. If the d/W & sink are in the island it keeps the corner free from appliances & the hob can be central in the run along the back wall. Are you have top to bottom ovens or a floor standing over with worktop over?
I suggest you take your plans to a kitchen showroom to help you decide as there’s a lot to consider including where costing plumbing, gas etc sits.

Are you having this drawn up by your supplier? You might find a bigger drawing helps so you can see the sizes and set out the corners, etc properly.
It's quite a lot in a small space.

I would move the dishwasher to the straight run - think about when it's door is open being loaded, will it be an obstruction. So make sure there's enough clearance to the island or it will be a real "excuse me" kitchen.

If the island is to be so big, put the hob on it and run the extract across the ceiling to an outlet (or have a wall fan).
Pull out/larder cupboards are better as wide individual drawers that can be pulled out one at a time, so I'd stick with a 60cm unit there.

I wouldn't hide shelves under the area with stools, people will kick them and they will be hard to access. Can you have the overhang on the short end instead and cupboards both sides? You need a 30cm overhang and stools that are not too high to sit comfortably - about 63cm seat height (Ikea have loads).

That picture is terrible and out of focus, very hard to advise.

pasok1000 · 05/01/2022 04:28

please see the better pictures - 3D, 2 plans 9 A and B

Plan A - just 3 tall units, more worktop space

PLAN B - the wall covered in all tall units, better look? but less worktop space

  1. I am worried that fridge ( my own) will be 70 cm - and other units 60 - will it be out of proportion/ symmetry?
  1. the walkway is about 90 cm and 100 cm between the units and the island
  1. where to put my appliances: coffee machine, blender, slow cooker - the ones I use regularly

Thank you

I think both photos look the same layout? Have you posted the right ones?

pasok1000 · 05/01/2022 04:41

I am trying to avoid hob/ sink on the island, as it gets messy, loaded quickly, so want to keep the island clear/ unobstructed...

DorsVenabili · 05/01/2022 05:10

Why don't you want anything on the island? makes better sense to ahve either the hob or the sink on the island - then the smaller appliances- kettle/toaster/coffee maker can go near the walls?
I don't think a hob gets cluttered
Check the gap- can two people pass easily- eg one be at the hob and the other in the island?
the sink looks small in the picture
I thought there was a triangle approach to where you put appliances?

sixtiesbaby88 · 05/01/2022 06:36

I have 90cm between my hob worktop and an island. I'd say there is not enough space to put the sink on the island. I wouldn't want to be using hot things on the hob with anyone standing so closely behind me. An empty island is also tidy and a great space for plating up

pasok1000 · 05/01/2022 07:43

sixtiesbaby88, is 90 cm ok, or shall I aim to do 1 m?

OP posts:
pasok1000 · 05/01/2022 07:44

the sialnd is 180 by 120 cm

OP posts:
pasok1000 · 05/01/2022 07:44

island...180 width by 120 cm depth

The problem is you have a huge island the size of a bed in the middle of the room, empty, and all the actual business of the kitchen jammed into a couple of metres on the side. Kitchens are for using, not admiring. If you have good storage and places to put things away it won't get cluttered except when you are using it.

A 90cm gap was a compromise for us as we wanted to keep the dining area big. You can just about walk past each other although there's quite a lot of excuse me's to get past, I wouldn't say it's wide enough for a hob one side and sink opposite. I'd be looking more for 120cm really. Why don't you try building something from boxes, tables, chairs to represent the gap and try walking past each other etc

pasok1000 · 06/01/2022 21:03

ok if I put hob on the island, centrally, I could put sink in the run near the wall, more to the side-would it be better than what it is atm?

OP posts:
HeddaGarbled · 06/01/2022 23:29

I can’t see any point to using the island as a breakfast bar when you have a table and chairs almost touching it.

Cherryblossoms85 · 06/01/2022 23:33

I would bin the breakfast bar and take back the space for more storage units under the island. I'd also put hob on island so I can face out whilst cooking and still talk to people. Tricky though with extractor fan, it's just always been my dream to cook and talk Grin

OrangeShark27 · 06/01/2022 23:40

Plan A looks miles better than plan B. But I think there's not enough gap between the wall units and the island. Your creating a tight galley style kitchen when you don't need to.

I also think the island and wall cabinets in general are overbearing for the size of actual kitchen which looks a bit squashed

rainbowplease · 06/01/2022 23:54

Ideal minimum space around an island is 1m we were told.
Personally I'd put the sink and a dishwasher on the island - really popular design that works well.
We have a breakfast bar/island in reasonable proximity to the table but I like it as somewhere my older DC can sit and read to me/do homework whilst I'm in the kitchen out of reach of my youngest.
I also wouldn't have 4 full height units.

pasok1000 · 07/01/2022 20:09

Thank you, I coudl then have 2 bar stools ( using 2/3 of the island and have 1 3rd for the deeper cupboard fo storage)?

OP posts:
pasok1000 · 07/01/2022 20:11

OrangeShark27,
if I move hob to the island and have moe worktops in the wall run, would having 4 tall units ( Plan B) be ok?
you aid you liked plan A - maybe because it is too crowded on the run, then I would remove the hob to the island?

Dishwasher needs to be next to sink for loading, especially if you like to rinse heavily soiled plates saucepans under tap otherwise you will be dragging everything across the floor
