Thoughts on engineered wood flooring?

I'm leaning towards wood flooring for my upcoming extension, however I want it to be light coloured which means it has to be engineered wood? Is that correct? How does it compare to real wood flooring?

Isnt engineered wood just a thin layer of real wood on top of composite/ply. Ideal if you have water based underfloor heating. Nothing to do with the colour which is due to the choice of timber. My extension has solid wood floors - reclaimed pine floorboards to match upstairs and herringbone pattern oak downstairs. You can have beech, oak, pine solid wood floor.

I have been to a couple of flooring shops recently and apparently no one buys real wood anymore, engineered is the most popular option.

We have it in our dining area. As easy to fit as laminate. It's quite heavy, though, so you need to be sure the floor underneath is stable.

We opted for unfinished flooring which we blather Ed in polyurethane varnish do that it would seal all the joins. We also kept it natural coloured so it would be easier to fix any disasters.

Despite 4 coats of the varnish, there are a couple of stains where someone has trodden on a grape and a patch that regularly gets splashed (dh seems to be incapable of washing up without squirting water all over the place) that has some water marks but it's otherwise easy to keep clean.

I have it in my kitchen diner, it's been down over 10 years and still looks good
