Previous owners painted over mould?

Very recently moved and already discovery mould patches where there weren't any before. Its not coming off and I have a horrible feeling it's because the sellers have painted over the mould rather than removing it. Does anyone have experience of this? Do I need to chip off all the old paint to get rid of the mould? Thank you!

In my experience you can clean it off and decorate but if it's in the plaster or wallpaper it'll come back through. Paints the are supposed to block it I haven't found work.

What is causing the mould? Is it condensation ? If so, it will keep coming back until the source is removed.

To be fair, any mould will continue until the source is removed. Can you improve the ventilation ?

Hg mould remover spray stopped black mould from condensation above my bathroom window. I put it on a cloth and wiped the ceiling. It disappeared for a month or two then returned and I wiped again. It’s never reappeared. However it wasn’t a large patch, just a small amount where the ceiling meets the wall. But HG is great for cleaning sealant and tiles so may be worth a go.

If mould is sandwiched between layers of paint the best thing would be to scrape off as much as you can to expose the mould, then treat it and then repaint.

The most important thing with mould isn't so much removing it as preventing regrowth by dealing with the damp conditions which allowed it to grow in the first place.

Thank you all for replying to my post- the mould patches don't seem to be appearing on walls that show any condensation. The issue is likely to be that this is an older house with single skin walls. We'll definitely make sure to run the dehumidifier more often and keep humidity in the house low. It's just strange that the mould is visible (white paint) but not easily wiping away.
