Dining or living area by the garden?

We have a square-ish area at the back of the house. The kitchen will take up almost half, going along the left, from front to back.

The right-side of the square will be divided into living & dining area - which would you put by the garden?

Do you already own the corner sofa? If not I think I’d look at alternatives to make seating more flexible.

I had the layout @CrumpledCrumpet suggests. It doesn’t work with children. You will be utterly fed up walking round that peninsular all the time. There are too many corner cupboards in the kitchen that are difficult to access. An island is so much easier to navigate!

Yes you can do a similar layout replacing protruding arm of the U with an island. I preferred the U as we had a young family and I liked being able to gate off the kitchen.

Now they are older I use it as an excuse to get the children to set the table Grin

Either way, I like having the kitchen in the corner rather in a straight line down one side of the room.
