Devon/ north Cornwall move

Hi I'm looking to move from pewsey wilts for the opposite of most people on here I guess.I would like quiet place but with good access to lots of pubs/hotels. So somewhere with large garden but tucked away from neighbours that's warmer than Wiltshire. Not bothered about shopping or schools. In fact I love where I live now outside of pewsey but the pubs are poor most people are hermits and it gets 2c colder at night here so gardening can be challenging.

It's freezing in Cornwall & North Devon. Very windy. I'd aim for South Devon if you're looking for balmy. A village out a bit though as most of it isn't that rural. You might struggle with shops/pubs etc & big garden/quiet.

Why don't you book to stay some places and see what you like?

Sounds alot like Devon lol

Wilkolampshade · 22/12/2021 11:33

Be aware the soil is Cornwall can be thin, sometimes extremely so in moorland or tin mining areas and not at all like rich Devonshire clay. My poor mum moved there to enjoy a retirement gardening only to find her garden consisted of a 4/5 inch layer of pretty infertile peaty stuff over granite bedrock with high copper readings from mining spoil.

Helpstopthepain · 22/12/2021 11:36

Cornwall isn’t known for being warm and we’re all hermits!

Sevensilverrings · 22/12/2021 11:40

South Devon or Dorset would be better for warmth and gardening. (Or Cornwall) Stay away from Dartmoor if your avoiding rain.
Budget will probably dictate which towns you can manage. Friendly places off the top of my head include South Brent (but it gets the rain off moor), Ashburton (lovely place), Kingsbridge, maybe Totnes if you like that vibe? Further east…some smaller places around Exeter are nice, or on the coast around there…more affordable than Sourh hams.
Some smaller places much friendlier than others. Some are ghost towns due to second homes, and this makes pubs etc a bit seasonal and touristy. You’d be better coming down for a visit and asking locals.

Is there anything else you are looking for, aside from a better range/standard of sociable pubs and hotels?

Also, this isn't an AIBU so I've suggested your post be moved to get more appropriate responses.

I live in Plymouth it's great ask me anything!

hettie · 22/12/2021 11:51

The winters are harsh as hell in North Devon/Cornwall. . Climate wise you need to be the other side of Dartmoor or otherwise you'll just get everything the Atlantic can throw at you. So areas like budleigh salterton, ottery St Mary or bishopsteignton. Ashburton maybe? Very expensive areas to live in mind....

LivMumsnet · 22/12/2021 11:58

Hi @alistairyoung, we've moved your thread to a different topic more suited to the subject. Hope that helps.

Good luck with your move.

Me too! I agree its a great place to live and bring up kids too.
prettyteapotsplease · 22/12/2021 16:24

I used to live in Exmouth (which is supposed to have its own microclimate) but when it rains - it rains, not many pubs though. What about Exeter?

TheBermudaTriangle · 23/12/2021 13:07

Okehampton might also be worth looking at, with several friendly pubs and restaurants, and great walks in the area. It does rain a lot though!

UpturnedUmbrella · 23/12/2021 13:24

I live just outside Exeter, another good option. I’ll be happy to answer questions

pastypirate · 23/12/2021 14:59

@StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes *high fives

Okehampton is miles from anywhere!

Kingsbridge is indeed lush but expensive. Ditto Dartmouth.

Rame is amazing and close to Plymouth.

My mum lives in lostwithiel and thinks it's wonderful. 5 miles from fowey and loads of beaches, loads of community and culture stuff going on and very pretty.

Teignmouth is somewhere i would look at though it's gorgeous.

Thissucksmonkeynuts · 23/12/2021 15:06

You won't be getting better weather. My mum counted once, it rained everyday for 9 months of one year where we lived, and being snowed in was grim and boring.
