Low pressure upstairs cold

Hello,

Hoping someone can help me. We are having hardly any water coming out our cold taps in our bathroom. We have had this issue before while a neighbour a few doors down was having building work. It rectified itself after the work was complete.

Now it’s happened again. Can’t see any building work going on down our road.

Any advise on what could be causing this issue and any ways to remedy it?

We have lots of issues with our bathroom. The shower pump doesn’t work. We have bought a new one to fit but the hot stop tap doesn’t close so we can’t isolate the water in order to fit it. Can’t find the stop tap for the property. We’ve checked all the outside stop taps but none seem to be for our property.

We have had a plumber out who quoted us £1900 to re run all the pipes as apparently they’re wrong? It’s not something we can afford so we were hoping to just change the pump ourselves as we did in our last property but we haven’t been able to locate the stop tap so are unable to do this.

It’s really stressing me out. Trickle of cold water upstairs and no flush. Having to manually fill the tank to flush.

Thanks in advance for any help

Measure it. Is it round or rectangular?

Different sheds carry different makes so may have one to fit, or about the right shape but a bit bigger will do. As it has no lid insulation scraps may have fallen inside to join the drowned spiders.

It also needs a jacket

You can do everything except changing the valves, which needs plumbing ability.

Hi Again,

So we resolved part of the issue we had. The pressure is now back. We also managed to close the gate valve for the hot. We want to replace our shower pump but have been unable to isolate the hot water. We have now managed to close the valve but hot water still runs out of our taps? Is that normal? Do we need to run them for ages or is it an indication that the gate valve isn’t properly closed or somethinf?

feel the pipes around this valve. Are they hot or cold?

Is it the valve supplying cold water from the loft tank to the bottom of the cylinder? Or taking hot water from the top of the cylinder?

Gate valves, when they break, usually break in the closed position. If they are not broken, they will reduce the flow of water as they are screwed down, and increase it when they are screwed up.

?how did you resolve the pressure problem?

LizMyles · 30/12/2021 10:15

The pressure problem was stuff in the loft sitting on top of the pipes. We think. We moved them and miraculously the water came back. The pressure is still bad but we have some water to work with.

The gate valve has been stuck in closed position which we didn’t realise. But the hot had still been working so I assume it’s completely broken. The valve is for the hot water in the airing cupboard and since we have opened it the hot water has more power than before. But when we put it back to close it does not stop the flow just reduces it a very small amount.

If I call a plumber in to replace the valve do they need to drain tank in loft it? Is it a massive job?

Thanks again for all your help

Basically we want to be able to replace our pump. We have a new one to install but can’t isolate the hot. Is there’s any other way of doing it than replacing gate valve?

"If I call a plumber in to replace the valve do they need to drain tank in loft it? Is it a massive job?"

Draining the tank is a trivial job. You tie up the ball valve float and turn on the cold bathtap.

But it is probably not necessary. The pipe from the tank can be corked with a rubber bung.

Thanks. I’m going to arrange a plumber to come and help us out.

Happy new year

Gate Valve now closing so we’re able to isolate the hot. Now we’ll be able to swap the pump which should help with pressure.

Managed to get the gate valve closing but running the hot tap on the bath and slowly opening and closing the valve. With each open and close it closed a little more until finally it closed completely.

It had been siezed in a part open part close position for the past 4 years we’ve lived here. We had thought it was seized on open so had been trying to turn it the wrong way. After wiggling it back and forth it finally gave.

Anyway, thought I’d update you. Thanks again for your help.
