New kitchen design - help me with flooring and paint please

Hello everyone, I'm so chuffed to finally say that DH and I have FINALLY agreed on a kitchen design, found a builder and a supplier and have a start date of 14th Feb!!!!

Now I have to decide on the flooring, lighting, worktops and wall colour and I'm not sure where to start. Could you lovely people, with your impeccable taste, help me out? It's a very small and awkward footprint so this design has quite a few compromises but it will be so much better than what is there at present.

I'm thinking of a very light duck egg blue for the walls behind the units or possibly a light dusty pink. We have hardwood in there now and I want to get rid of it and go for either tile, lvt or karndean on the floor. I'm all about things being easy to clean. The worktops are going to remain a white colour, i'm not sure whether to go faux marble or have a sparkly laminate. The kitchen gets good afternoon light but it is so narrow that I want to keep it light and airy as possible.

Thank you so much

We had this kitchen from Howdens in our last flat. It was great. I kept it really white so white walls, wood worktop, kept the hardwood floor and white metro tiles. Will see if I can find a photo

jellyxat · 21/12/2021 22:34

Are you sure you want to get rid of hard wood? Tiles are a lot colder!

We had a Naked Doors kitchen fitted - white units, marble effect quartz top (marble is beautiful but very high maintenance), antique brass fittings including Perrin and Rowe tap, and Zellige tiles. I can share a photo if helpful.

I think light pink sounds lovely! Farrow and Ball Pink Ground is beautiful - we have it in my daughter's room.

You might consider 6-8 spotlights. We had them installed and they really brighten our north-facing kitchen.

RunnerDown · 21/12/2021 22:48

We have just done our kitchen in some white doors and some dark grey. We have a white silestone worktop with a pale grey fleck through it.
I painted the walls in farrow and Ball dimpsie and I love it .It’s a very light duck egg blue. Had lots of compliments .

What does the house look like? I would be heavily influenced by whether it was an old period property with high ceilings or a new ish house with squat walls.

FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 22/12/2021 13:55

Thank you very much for all your replies!

@jellyxat The hardwood was installed throughout the ground floor but very shoddily. The new kitchen is a different layout so a new floor is necessary. I thought that putting down a different hardwood in the kitchen wouldn't look very good when you transition from the old hardwood in the hall. I also want something more hard-wearing.
I would love to see pics of your kitchen! I love Zellige tiles.

@RunnerDown do you have pictures of your kitchen with the dimpsie? I'd love to see it.

@FedUpFelicia The house is a small, 2-bed, 30s terrace in Scotland (see similar layout attached). There are high ceilings, large windows, simple coving and high skirting boards but no original features such as fireplaces etc. We have to redecorate completely after the kitchen and I'll be going for a light, airy vibe with punches of colour here and there.

I've also attached a picture of how the kitchen is laid out just now. This was taken about 6 years ago so it is looking much worse for wear! I detest the dark brown worktops and beige walls.

Aha totally get now why you'd want tiles rather than new hardwood that doesn't match the current. I love the look of limestone, or classic marble black and white checks, but I'm not sure either is terribly easy to look after!

Here's a photo of my not quite complete kitchen with Zellige tiles. Walls are F&B Strong White. Woodwork F&B All White.

@jellyxat, that is lovely! I really love the tiles. I had been looking at zellige in a light teal colour but decided against tiles so that we can change colours more easily if I want to change things up in the future.

I think for our flooring I'm looking for something easy to maintain that doesn't look like cheap laminate faux stone. Does such a thing exist?

You can get marble effect porcelain tiles that look very realistic, if you like the marble look.

We're getting monochrome encaustic style porcelain tiles fitted in our cloakroom soon - this one www.mandarinstone.com/product/monochrome-decor-porcelain/

FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 22/12/2021 14:31

I'm really in love with the terrazzo look and have found the most beautiful large format tiles. capietra.com/shop/foundation-porcelain-ceramic/piazza-geo-pearl-porcelain/
but DH hates it so I'm back to the drawing board! I've also looked at these fellies for the kitchen but I think they would be too busy. www.bakedtiles.co.uk/products/oslo-decor-multi-13-cm-x-13-cm-1
Those encaustic tiles are very cool and will look lovely in an entranceway.

Ah I see! I love natural stone floors in a kitchen so I'd do that personally. I have travertine in a thin kitchen too and it's lovely. Yes, cold, but so refreshing in the summer!

jellyxat · 22/12/2021 14:36

I love terrazzo! I think what you've linked looks beautiful, what's your husband's objection? It's quite modern - maybe he prefers something more old-fashioned?

The Baked Tiles ones look great but agree might be too busy. I got my Zellige tiles from Baked Tiles and was very impressed with quality.

Have you tried Bert & May? They do lots of encaustic style tiles that are similar to your second link but a bit less busy.

jellyxat · 22/12/2021 14:41

These ones are a bit like your Baked Tile ones, but maybe less busy? Or maybe just as busy actually! www.bertandmay.com/products/black-santona-tile

I'd go for a lovely patterned blue tile floor to match the duck egg walls. Personally I like a patterned blind too because I think venetians are quite officey and cold and bare looks industrial. I probably like more softness than many though so whatever suits you. If you get a quartz then you could just have an upstand and painted walls? If not, something little, white and with a lovely sparkly sheen. It's quite a small kitchen so maybe you can splash out on some more expensive wall tiles?

languagelover96 · 23/12/2021 09:07

A lovely blue tiled patterned floor that matches the walls is best.

JaffacakeJanine · 23/12/2021 10:14

Aww I love the terrazo, would also pick out the blues from the wall 😭
Are the units staying white?

FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 24/12/2021 09:33

@JaffacakeJanine, units are going to be matte white. I've found these tiles and ordered samples. I still like the terrazzo!

My new charcoal amtico floor.

The cupboards, or sides—haven’t decided yet—will be blue china by little greene, to match main kitchen adjacent.

Sorry, have no idea where the transgender bit came from! Must have downloaded from elsewhere on MN.

FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 24/12/2021 09:41

@oneglassandpuzzled, that's hilarious! I was wondering what it had to do with flooring.
I like the amtico. Is it easy to clean?

OP posts:
oneglassandpuzzled · 24/12/2021 09:42

Very easy to clean and vacuum with the soft stain brush.
