Hi all, I'm panicking like crazy because I took out a new home insurance policy recently and there was a problem with the direct debit - so the insurers have cancelled the policy.

I'm freaking out that this means new premiums will skyrocket. all for a silly mistake. I had only had it in place for a month so I missed one or two payments I think.
Anyone who has knowledge of this, what can I do? can I appeal?
Please DM me if you can offer any quidance - thank you!!

Get in touch with them and see if you can pay what you owe and get future payments set properly. You might be able to correct this situation.

Phone them and explain - you may have to wait a while to speak to a human being but I would just phone them. I would be clear about the problem with the direct debit - i.e. is was there not enough money in the account which you can rectify or was some information incorrect or did you set dates incorrectly. Also - if the first person who you get in touch with says computer says cancelled ask to speak to their manager supervisor . Other than that ( and others could say better - why not just take out a policy with someone else - I am not sure I have ever been asked about previous insurance.

I hope you can resolve this - I can see worrying but I think step one is to telephone current insurers & maybe see where you go from there.

Home insurance isn’t like car insurance, premiums don’t go up if you’ve had a period of being uninsured. So don’t worry about that.

I’d personally go with a different provider. They can’t be that good if they can’t sort a simple direct debit to your account. Unless the provider is the same as who you have your car insurance with? In which case most providers offer multi-policy discounts if you have car + home insurance with them.

But don’t worry, and don’t try to pay for months already gone past. If something has happened in those months that would have been insured, you’re shit out of luck they won’t honour a cancelled policy as it’s your responsibility to ensure payments are made even if they’re doing the direct debt set up.

We don’t actually know who made the DD error.
