Southend on sea

Hello ,
We recently moved to this area and living near a road near sea front / sea adventure . We really liked the property and bought it but now many people are raising doubts if it will be safe to bring up my child there ? There is a pub / club in the corner ( I didn’t notice it before as it is not doing very well and I visited the property at day time ). Also summer time I was told the sea front will get really noisy . Someone told there is housing association nearby ( I couldn’t fathom why this would be a problem ?!) and most of the house on the road are tenanted . I did notice though that these roads Burnaby , beresford road , Arnold avenue are less cleaner than others ? I have now begun to think if I should have moved to this road with my child before even knowing the area properly ?!! If this will be a safe and good area for my LO to grow up .

Also I was told brawls May break out in the pub / club , tenants of HA aren’t great and not always have a good impact , I’m not sure why this would be so ? In my eye every one is equal and there is only good heart / bad heart and I want to bring my child up with that attitude too ? Apologies but I’m very confused and tensed . It was , buying a house , was a big investment for me

If you buy anywhere near the sea it will be busy in the summer, you were very naive if you didn't think of that before buying!

Hi OP, local resident here - there are a lot of opinions locally regarding that area - especially the estate. I know someone who lives on the estate with no issues whatsoever.
The pub in question has recently been taken over and i certainly don’t recall hearing of any mass brawls over the summer from there or anywhere along the seafront. Yes, it will be noisy in the summer, there will be A. LOT of traffic, but you’re a stones throw to the beach which is a lovely place to be.
I think all you can do is take others judgements with a pinch of salt and see how you feel. Please don’t let others put you off of your hard-earned home!

I grew up in one of the nicest parts of Shoeburyness. I'm in mid 20s now so wasn't that long ago.
Seafront is packed in summer.
It isn't a particularly safe area and I had been followed several times by random men during secondary school aged both in Shoebury and Southend seafront.
I wouldn't raise my children there. It's quite rough. There are nicer parts, south church but on the whole, it wouldn't be somewhere I'd live if I could avoid it.

Oh and they'll always be talking about the latest blood bath by the kursal in school with great excitement. If you're lucky, it'll proudly be a classmates uncle/brother/cousin/father who absolutely smashed the other bloke and your DC will feel as though they have some sort of connection about the latest fight outside the kursal!

You have picked a busy part of the seafront and it will get busy at times like any seafront but you are not straight on the main road so don't worry unnecessarily.

It all depends where you have moved from whether it's a step up or a step down.

You'll be fine. I live right in the centre of Southend (Greyhound area) and the only people who comment negatively are those in the 'posh parts' who rarely / never visit my area and are speaking on heresay.

MrsBobDylan · 18/12/2021 10:11

First of all, don't panic - houses can be sold.

Secondly, give it a year and see what you think. We live near lots of tenanted bedsits and at the foot of a high rise block of flats.

Lots of very odd but harmless people. Been here three years and have felt safe.

If you feel unsafe in your home then you can sell up and try again.

Try not to worry.

The roads around the Kursaal have always had a bit of a reputation for being rough. I had a school friend who lived there who seem to be burgled repeatedly.

You are super close to the sea though which is good as you won’t have to worry about parking when you want to go to the beach!

Have you bought, or do you rent? You could move?

Imamomofone · 18/12/2021 10:32

Yes I’m not on the main road but stones throw away from sea front . I’m not particularly worried about noise unless it’s too loud and goes on late in summer days ! I’m worried about safety and neighbourhood as my child will grow up watching people around him . After reading the comments I feel may be it was not the greatest decision to choose this road

It's not a good area OP. Whilst that's not an issue for some people, if it is an issue to you I don't see how you didn't pick this up before moving..?
The crime, the nightclubs, the tourists... it's hardly hidden.

Why would it be that your child can’t make good friends at school?

Which school is it, Porters?
