Embarking on a much needed renovation/extension in the new year and one of the things I'm most excited about is a new kitchen!

However I'm clueless about where to begin? Which supplier to go with?

Wren? Howdens? Magnet? IKEA?

I want to source my own kitchen worktops (granite/marble etc) but how do I find a local seller?

So clueless Confused

DIY Kitchens all the way.

I planned it myself using the online planner, but took me an age as our kitchen has a large 6 foot window and 3 doors to work around. Though I would count myself as an experienced DIYer.

Easy to do if your kitchens rectangular and you’re not moving things around too much.

Even so I managed to leave a cupboard door off and they rang me to check I had everything.

I didn’t specify a delivery date when I ordered. A year ago they needed 4 weeks notice of delivery date.

They were very efficient, but delivered into our garage as we weren’t quite ready for fitting. They come ready assembled, so quite easy to fit, though I found them very heavy.

Our sink came from IKEA, the tap is a Franke (can easily get spare parts for it), the sockets etc from Screwfix and the tiles from Johnson’s Outlet. I still have loads of tiles left as it worked out the same price to get 2 extra boxes for free delivery.

We used our own fitter, which took about a week. Though I did the tiling and painting etc.

I also used a plumber and electrician and dint have any problems.

I anticipated problems though and planned for them as much as I could.

Can’t fault the quality and the service, especially for the price.

We used a local independent kitchen company with their own factory less than a mile from our house. When I first went into the showroom I wasn't even sure we could afford them, but was keen to go local, but was very pleased with the price (less than £5k not including many appliances as AO were cheaper). We also used the kitchen fitter they recommended who sorted out the delivery (bottom cabinets one day and top cabinets when there was room for them, as the workshop was so close). Very pleased with the final result

I've bought two kitchens this year:

1 - Small galley kitchen for annexe.

Purchased units from DIY Kitchens and had my trusted local carpenter/fitter install for me. Bought by own appliances, organised plumber, tiler and electrician myself.

Units are fine, pleased with the overall finish for what it is. Wish I had made a slightly different decision about the layout. I bought what I thought would work and it's fine but could be better in hindsight.

2 - Main kitchen & scullery in house.

Looked around for a very long time, had several quotes but went with local independent kitchen supplier who had excellent customer feedback and gave really help input into the overall kitchen design. Attention to detail was incredible from lines, symmetry to function and placement of everything to make the kitchen workable.

Units are German brand (Beckermann) and are superb quality. They are also custom made to exactly the sizes we need where necessary so everything fits just perfectly. Kitchen company has supplied and fitted everything - units, worktops, lighting, appliances, tiling, glass splashbacks etc. Organising the relevant trades (plasterer, electrician, plumber, tiler etc.) has all been down to them, no stress for us.

Any issues are their problem - quartz worktop fitter scratched a couple of unit drawer fronts and these are being replaced within hassle. Had I opted to have this done separately I can see this would have been a challenge to get sorted out.

Quality and finish is fantastic. Units are much better quality than the DIY ones and feel like they will outlast them considerably. Layout is perfect, so workable and looks amazing.

Ultimately your budget will determine what approach you take but if you can afford it I would go with a local independent with a good reputation every time.

I wouldn't use Magnet.
Sh*te after fitting service when newly fitted items broke.

We had ours done by Wickes.
Can’t fault it. I waited until the sale came round and got 50% off and 5 years interest free credit.
I love my kitchen
