How much did your fitted wardrobe cost?

Beurre · 14/12/2021 23:39

I've been quoted £4500 for a 3m fitted wardrobe, shaker style with a mix of drawers, shoe rack etc. Is that pricey? Have no idea about what to expect in terms of costs but my DP seems to think it's too expensive. Would appreciate any advice or local firms you would recommend - we're in London. Thank you.

For those who have used or had Sharps or similar - do they draw out a plan which you can keep...and then take to a joiner?

WorriedMutha · 17/12/2021 17:35

They do a plan but they only give you your copy once you've signed. You could sketch it yourself and make notes if you want to get comparative quotes.

Used a brilliant company I found on Instagram. Lux Fitted Wardrobes. Very reasonably priced and covers London and further. Several friends have used him after seeing my results. Abi, the owner, has built several wardrobes for me as well as shelves in living room alcoves and cabinets in utility room. Will be using to do shoe cupboard in porch and another wardrobe in spare room. I can't add an image as I'm a new member but believe me, my wardrobe is stunning! Less than 4k and it's huge! 2 x 3 sets of drawers, accessory pull out draw, pull out shoe racks for both DH and I, shelves for bags, lots of hanging space.

I'll post an image when I'm out of MN 48 hour newbie lockdown!

Good luck!

I used ikea kitchen units but it still cost about £3k. I think your quote sounds fair

Paolin · 18/12/2021 23:28

I’m following with interest. Looking fit a wardrobe 3mtrs wide from and ceiling to floor is about 2.5 mtrs. Would consider Ikea but ceiling has a slope on one side and chimney breast in the middle. Have been giving an estimate of around £2.5k (inc. handles, soft close drawers) but not painted. We’re looking to get at least one more quote from a local carpenter but would prefer that units and doors are painted. Based near Epsom.

MissCruellaDeVil · 18/12/2021 23:39

Mine was about 8k but they span across the length of the room. They are amazing. We have a loft bedroom if it is relevant.

Ribb · 20/12/2021 19:13

Pic as mentioned previously. Less than 4k.

I paid £3,200 three years ago for fitted wardrobes around 4 metres wide. That was a local company in the London suburbs. It would cost more now.
Ikea would not have fitted in the space so well and I would still have had to pay someone toinstall.

WorriedMutha · 21/12/2021 08:45

You need to note that things have changed in the last year. Wood prices have doubled. We had lots of suggested carpenters from local sources but they've got waiting lists and really only want to quote for work by email. They just haven't got time to do visits. We got one man who did other work for us on an hourly rate basis but he's dropped away from cabinet making. He said the birch he uses has doubled in price from £55 per plank a year ago to over £100+ now. A typical wardrobe is 20+ planks and so he finds when he gives quotes he squeezes the labour charge. In the end we went with Sharps for the certainty of nailing down a quote now and getting a date (even that's April 22). It was also the total lack of enthusiasm from local craftsmen to even bother to quote for work. It wasn't what we set out to do but how things worked out. Our hourly rate guy also said that the quote from Sharps was fair and he wouldn't be doing it much cheaper even if he was willing to.

About £1.5k from a local company 4 years ago. 3m. Definitely have a look at local companies first. Sharps etc. were charging ridiculous amounts.

@WutheringHeights66 please can I ask you details of the company you used. I am West Yorkshire based and looking for recommendations. Many thanks

Newnormal99 · 23/12/2021 21:49

I did a bit of a cheap option. I had alcoves already so had floor to ceiling double doors put on them (approx 100cm) with just a foot or so of wood lining alcoves to fix the doors on rather than full frame. Couple of shelves and hanging rail.

The a single shallower cupboard with shelves.

I then used boxes from IKEA for storing bits in. Had to paint it myself.

About £500

£7k for 4 x 1m double wardrobes. 2 of the wardrobes will have internal half drawers.

They're being made by my kitchen company and then I'm having installed and hand painted on site.

My tip is to avoid all the chains and get a recommendation on local groups for a good independent joiner.

lagerandcigars · 23/01/2022 08:49

We got 3 quotes - from 3 different levels - we live near London - this was 10 years ago.
First one was £1800 - friend warned me not to use - it was her friend's husband and he'd done a shit job for quite a few people in their friendship group.
Second one £10,500 was from a guy who saw himself as very top end - wouldn't even give us the plan of the room, as he was so paranoid people used him for his ideas.
Third £3500 was from a guy who had been recommended over and over again on Facebook - his work looked brilliant (and so many times the trades have let me down) ...and we went with him - he was brilliant and we used in 5 more times, never concerned about the cost, the quality of workmanship and his determination to do a great job was his selling point. He has very long wait times - 6-9 months but I'd wait every time for a guaranteed decent job.

@WutheringHeights66 I know this thread us from a few months ago but any chance you could tell me such company you used please? We’re in Leeds and debating whether to go with Ikea or not.
Thanks

buckeejit · 05/08/2022 20:10

I'm just adding some more ikea pax love here. So easy & quick & sturdy & satisfying! I'm happy with plain white but lots of 'hacks' to pimp it up.

If I had a spare £6k I maybe would have bought fancier but I'm also glad to have less peopling/tradesfolk to deal with!

Hi @WutheringHeights66 - would you mind giving the name of the people you used. Looking for someone who can cover Morley area.

Paolin · 07/03/2023 23:05

Exactly a year ago we got a new wardrobe from a small company recommended by our neighbour in SW London. Wardrobe is about 3.5 metres wide, all in was £3.5k. Design in CAT software and it came out exactly as per design. It took about one month from start to finish. Huge choice of colours, door frames, etc.

How much for fitted wardrobes?
Have just been quoted £30,000 for 2 large wardrobe, 1 medium and some
bookcases and alcove shelving for a small terraced house in SW London. Seems v expensive to me.

Thereshegoesagain · 16/08/2023 09:18

We were quoted eleventy million pounds from Sharp. It genuinely was more than the cost of our newly fitted kitchen.
So we bought a PAX system from IKEA and had a local handyman/kitchen fitter put it together for us. Was at least a quarter of the original quote from Sharps.

Molly88 · 16/08/2023 16:03

Thanks for that, that’s my next option !
