How much for half decent carpet?

We are currently doing our house up and I have no idea how much to budget. We are trying to get the best quality we can but lots of our budget has been eaten up by finding woodworm and other horrible surprises Sad.

How much should I budget m2 for ok quality carpet? It would be for stairs, landing and bedrooms. No shoes or young children but likely to be tea spills on stairs and messy teen bedrooms.

Trying to find the sweet spot between not buying cheap crap and being able to finish all our much needed jobs.

Thanks in advance Smile

John Lewis have heavy domestic man made from around £20 m2. Personally I would look for wool and man made and pay more. But it depends on your budget and needs. I don’t have young children and we have a wool velvet carpet on the landing and in bedrooms. It’s expensive. There are some pretty decent carpets made for JL that look good value for money and I would get samples and see what you think. All seem pretty stain resistant.

I have a mix of wool and man made. Wool was expensive, has lasted over 16 years, bounces back if furniture is moved, can mark, but carpet washer brings it back fairly well. Man made doesn't seem to mark as easily, less than £10 a sqm, ideal for spills as quick to wipe, but doesn't feel as dense and think will wear in patches sooner.

Thank you everyone, I posted this before I went to sleep and forgot all about it... Wish I had seen the deleted comment

We have just paid £30 a sqm for carpet, underlay and fitting. The carpet alone is about £18sqm. It's all the extras like the gripper bars, door bars etc.... that mount up! It does have a 10 year guarantee though and is stain resistant and scrubbable (needed with kids!)

Probably between £20-£30 square metre for a reasonable carpet plus underlay, etc. we got our downstairs one from JL, it was one of their special buy carpets that are usually available in January and July sales.

We were pleasantly surprised with a £4850 bill three years ago for 20 x 12 living room, 14 x 14 sitting room, two hallways, 2 flights of curved stairs and four bedrooms ranging from 17 x 12 down to 12 x 12. Wool carpets on stairs, hallways and in living rooms, blend in bedrooms, independent carpet shop and included underlay, grippers, thresholds etc and fitting.

More responses, thanks! @Changecountetextraordinaire does the carpet look the same in bedrooms and high traffic areas? I had wondered about splurging on stairs and landing but going a bit cheaper in the bedrooms but I think I would like it to look the same if that is possible.

I would always spend more on stair, hall and lounge carpet. Preferably an 80%wool 20% man made with a high weave count. Wool is much more forgiving and if someone should unfortunately slip on the stairs won’t give friction burns.
I have always found independent carpet shops better value than the big warehouse stores. They often have the same dye lots in different qualities of weave count.

The carpets are neutrals and we matched as closely as possible - blind man on a galloping horse as DM would say....... There really is only the upper hall where you'd possibly notice a difference but I don't so can't imagine anyone else would.
