Can I put an integrated bin in a larder unit?

I am thinking of having a larder with separate top and bottom doors, at the end of the kitchen next to the back door. This would also be an ideal place for the bin, so I’m thinking of having the top part with pull out shelves to hide some appliances and the bottom part with a pull out bin.

Would the whole larder start to smell if the bin started to smell?

No probably not.

However we have a waste disposal unit to stop this happening! If takes everything except larger meat bones. If you buy a Franke or Insinkerator you will not have smelly food waste hanging around!

I've got the same as you're planning, as have my parents. Mine is only a single bin but they have glass and paper recycling bins too.

Never had a problem with stinky bins, as long as it's emptied frequently. I don't put food waste in though.

The shelves above, are 'serviced' by a separate door so I'm happy to put fresh food as well as tins in them.

We have recycling and general waste bins that are built into the kitchen food prep areas. I also have the veg prep sink there too. Just makes it a prep zone with waste bins as needed.

Our paper bin is in the laundry room.

It is completely irrational and probably because I’ve never used one, but insinkerators make me nervous Blush I don’t know if I could relax around the sink for fear of disposing of my fingers. I may see if some showrooms have a ‘live’ one on display.

It’s cat food waste mainly (Natures Menu which seems to honks as soon as the cats are finished) In spring and summer I take any food waste straight to the outside bins, but when it’s cold, dark and wet I avoid going outside as much as I can.

I could have the bins under the sink, though I imagine they will be smaller.

Honestly! Your fingers don’t go near it! I’ve had waste disposal units in houses since the late 70s. If you need to push anything down, and you shouldn’t, you could use a wooden spoon! However you need a bit of water to flush everything down and cat food will slip down easily! You have a rubber flanged separator between you and the blades which are set quite some distance down below the sink. The surface mounted switch is set back out of the reach of children. I cannot see why, in your circumstances, why you wouldn’t have one. My DD has one in a flat. It really does save on food waste hanging around and effort to change the rubbish bag all the time!

minipie · 14/12/2021 15:10

I wouldn’t do this personally

a) for me the below counter level drawers are by far the most useful bit of the larder cupboard, so I wouldn’t want to lose those

b) if you’re having an integrated bin, the best place for it is just below your main prep space, so you can easily open it and sweep crumbs/peelings in

c) I wouldn’t want old food waste kept near my new food although this is possibly irrational

I also hate waste disposal units - I grew up with one and it scared me plus they are noisy and non eco friendly.

TizerorFizz · 14/12/2021 15:26

Utter rubbish about waste disposal units. Modern ones are very good. They are very eco friendly! No food waste going to lend fill! Much better solution for flats in particular. If you don’t have a modern one you don’t really know the benefits. Being scared is utterly stupid and irrational! Are you not a grown up now? My DDs have spent all their lives with them! Not scary at all. Mine even takes chicken bones.

JustWonderingIfYou · 14/12/2021 15:31

I've always been told the waste disposal sink things are bad for the sewage system as all the grease and fay goes down the drain contributing to fatbergs.

Commercial kitchens aren't allowed them anymore I think.

Hohofortherobbers · 14/12/2021 17:07

I've never really understood why food disposal units are allowed, it must be really bad for the drains

TizerorFizz · 14/12/2021 17:22

They are not! Everything is liquidised. We have private drainage anyway. Are you trying to tell me that only people with waste disposal units put fat down a sink? I hardly use fat. Why would I put it into the waste disposal unit? We have a compost heap as well. Used properly they are fine. I agree fat isn’t.

witsendeverytime · 14/12/2021 18:26

I grew up where just about everyone had one and they give me the heebie jeebies too!

FrogFairy · 14/12/2021 19:58

Can you put the cat food into your food waste bin?

Fuuuuuckit · 15/12/2021 05:49

Cats wasting food?!?

Can you serve smaller portions so there's none left to go in the bin?

My mog has one wet pouch a day and then dry mix. The wet pouch is always gone within 10 mins, pouch rinsed ready to recycle.
