Island V Peninsula - which of these plans looks best?

We are currently planning an extension to the rear of our 3 bed detached home. We're trying to roughly plan the kitchen so we know what will go where and what size window to put in etc. Do you guys think we'd fit an island in the space? The door into the kitchen is beside the bank of tall units. I feel with an island we'll be in the door and straight into the island. I like the idea of a more open feel with the peninsula but am concerned about work space near the oven, hob and sink.

The room to the right is to be the utility room (currently our kitchen).

I've only estimated where the hob and sink might go along the window wall. We want a long narrow picture window but a kitchen provider said a hob under the window is against building regs. We need to check this out.

I've got a similar layout with a peninsula. We've got a butcher's block/small mobile island in the middle area where I can put hot dishes from the oven - either to check when I'm cooking things or when food is ready and hot. We just have one seat at the far side of the peninsula, nearest to the wall, which gets used when there is just one person eating breakfast or snacking. Our peninsula goes within 1.2 m of the other wall so very much helps delineate the eating area to the cooking area and I put the hob on there so I didn't have my back to everybody else when I am cooking or food prepping. our peninsula is 1m wide.

I would do longer narrower utility and have the extra space in kitchen around island rather than between a sofa and TV. Seating at ends of island (just for 2 people max) so it is narrower but will be very useful there. I would not have peninsula seating right by dining table.

I prefer the island. Islands are so useful in terms of overall kitchen circulation compared with peninsulas, and I think in your plan the island seating is better located. With the island you also get 6 units of cupboard space whereas with the peninsula you get half that. I think islands are generally better when you have large crowds over because people can stand around/eat/chat/help out easily.

Thanks all for your input. I would have liked an island but just in this space I don't know if it's practical.

Funnily enough, we had originally planned to stick a box onto the back of the house and have it all open plan with the utility at the other side of the house - pretty much what was suggested above. When the architect suggested the new layout our first response was "no way"! We've talked it through for a couple of months now and I like his plan after all - although you all have me thinking back to the first plan again!

I'll redo the plan again and throw it up here later and see what the thoughts are then.

Thanks - it's great to get another perspective.
