Moving to Huddersfield

Eve1989 · 12/12/2021 17:00

Considering Huddersfield after struggling to settle for Leicestershire. I have family in Barnsley but I do not want to live in Barnsley because as much as I like the area, I do not want to live close to my ex sis-inlaw who still lives there.

I am wondering though, would you guys who have experience of Yorkshire recommend it. I do not mind Wakefield or Leeds. I have read terrible things about Sheffield so not sure about it.

Just to add, I am black and so is my son and I have lived most of my adult life in London. Therefore, of course so I am mindful of culture shock.

I have just come to realise that I need to be around my family. I do not have any family, anywhere else, and my cousin who lives in London as me, is planning to move out.

Thanks to you guys as usual for your advice.

Parts of Huddersfield are really nice, Slaithwaite/Marsden way are beautiful and quite out of the centre. But like anywhere, there are rough parts of Huddersfield too. You have good access to motorways, most parts of Huddersfield have local train stations if you don't drive. Depends what you need nearby/what parts of Huddersfield you'd be looking at, it's a big place!

If you can afford Leeds move there. More diverse.
Many Yorkshire towns have a large ethnic minority population but they are not ethnically diverse.
Leeds offers better job opportunities and better educational opportunities.

Thank you- do you know the nice parts of Leeds? Thanks

Depends what your budget is.

There are also lots of towns along the railway lines to Leeds ( Ilkley, Otley, Burley, Bingley, Skipon etc) which offer great educational opportunities and a range of house prices.

The climate in Huddersfield (I live there) is amongst the most inclement in the UK. High rainfall (37 inches), large parts of the town are over 500 ft - so windy, and a long way from the coast and high up, so cold, frosty and snowy.
On climate grounds alone, I'd find somewhere else.

Do you need to consider constraints such as your job? You can drive from Huddersfield to Wakefield for the London train and the town itself is on the Trans Pennine route, so well connected when you consider the motorway is very close. There are two grammar schools within travelling distance for some parts of it.

Manchester. Not Huddersfield.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 12/12/2021 23:05

Honley is nice.

All lovely areas but it depends what you are after. For what it’s worth, Sheffield is a great place, lots of diversity, cracking arts and sports scenes, close to the peaks but also very Green as a city.
There are some not so great areas to avoid but that’s true if anywhere.

Do you want to be BArnsley side ? Where would you be commuting to ? Budget ? Are schools important ?

There's some lovely areas of Huddersfield and some not so !

My budget is £260k.

School is vital because my son is only in year 4. I was really hoping to continue working in London because there is a lot of WFH at the moment but it would still mean that I have to travel to London at least, once a week. That said, I would have to look for a job in neighbouring areas when I move. I know that I will be able to find work, when the need arises based on my job type.

I would also like a 3 bed.
Thanks

The villages to the West of Barnsley have good schools. All but one of them is good or outstanding. Crime rate is low, and it is easy to get to Sheffield, Wakefield and Leeds.

Both Wakefield and Sheffield stations have secure multi storey carparks. Or you could look at towns and villages on the Penistone line for direct rail access to Sheffield and Huddersfield.

I honestly don't think the climate in Huddersfield is that bad - it's nothing like as cold or rainy as Scotland, and I don't think it's particularly windy. It's not miles from the coast, either - both the east and west coasts are do-able in a couple of hours.

Given the choice between Huddersfield, Wakefield or Leeds, I'd go for Huddersfield. It's much prettier, and the town centre is quite nice. Wakefield's town centre is run down, and it looks a bit depressing.

Thank you. Can I please ask what postcode areas are nice? I have seen some properties in HD3 & HD4. Are these nice areas?

Thanks a lot

I came on to say look at Lindley, Marsh, Salendine Nook (all HD3). They are diverse areas with good schools (Lindley in particular) HD4 is less desirable. Places mentioned upthread such as Honley, Slaithwaite and Marsden are all lovely but not culturally diverse at all. The weather is fine. If you look at Leeds that is a bit of a trek to Barnsley. Sheffield however is great, but again the surrounding villages not particularly diverse.

Orangecrisp · 13/12/2021 13:27

Both those postcodes cover large areas some parts nice and some not! HD3 is rural in parts. Do you drive?

For your budget and requirements I would look at Mirfield, there is a direct train to London and you would be walking distance to the station in most parts.
