Are they taking the piss?

We got the phone call today around 1:30pm from our solicitor to say we had completed on our new house (FTB) and we can go to pick the keys up from the sellers as we now own the property.
(online EA so we pick keys up directly at the house from the sellers)

However, we've been in touch with the sellers over the last few days keeping each other up to date etc, on Tuesday she said her EA said it would be anywhere between 10am-5pm for them and their new house.
Today she messaged at 1:45pm and said 'just had the call to say the sale is all complete :) just waiting on our new property now' ... she still hasn't messaged to say she's ready to hand the keys over. Yet, they've had a moving van parked outside for a week now (we just live down the road so often drive past).

Are they taking the piss? Should she have handed the keys over as soon as the sale was complete? Are they allowed to stay and wait in the property until their new house is ready?

This happened to a client when I worked as a cleaner. Four of us went in and got it done. Sounds like you'll need more elbow grease than just one cleaner.

IntermittentParps · 09/12/2021 22:18

Piss stains?!? What a bunch of arseholes they are. Get on to your solicitor and see if there’s anything you can hit them up with the costs of,the cheeky twunts.

AntiHop · 09/12/2021 22:37

What arseholes. Take photos and videos and get your solicitor to speak to theirs about covering the cost of cleaning .

prayingforrainbows · 10/12/2021 00:08

Definitely getting onto the solicitors tomorrow regarding the state it's been left in.

They've left all of their belongings in the garden - a broken bbq, swings, slides, table & chairs to which we all declined wanting when asked!

They've broken a drawer in the kitchen, it's hanging off literally, they left a dirty tray in the grill covered in bacon fat 🤮

I've managed to get a cleaning company in tomorrow afternoon, had to cancel our moving day tomorrow until everything's sorted. Costing us over £200 just on the cleaning!

Then god knows how much for removals for all of their sh*t in the garden. So fed up.

Definitely pursue with your solicitor, they can bill the vendor for the cost of skip hire for getting rid of stuff that was not on the fixtures and fittings list agreed by you. As PP said, video the place from room to room including the loft and garden as well as date stamped photos.

Gazelda · 10/12/2021 07:46

Get your solicitor to pass all costs on to the previous owners. Make sure you've got lots of timed pics.

Congratulations on your first owned home. This hassle will all be a distant memory in a months time.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 10/12/2021 09:14

Gin sounds like you need it!

NoSquirrels · 10/12/2021 09:55

Keep a record of all costs, and get your solicitor to chase them for the money.

It always strikes me there should be some sort of bond of money held back on a sale, like paying builders but keeping back a sum as contingency for issues arising. The system really is shit.

Plenty of 🍷 when we hooooopefully get sorted tonight! Thanks everyone.

What utter arseholes. Do they have no shame?

Pipsquiggle · 10/12/2021 17:10

Just awful OP.

Make sure they pay for all the removal of stuff.

There was a lot of stuff left when we bought our current house. We thought they might not do a good job so we clearly stipulated they had to take away EVERYTHING and pay for removal. Loads of stuff was left in the garden - it took 8 skips to clear it. They paid

Gets worse guys 🤦🏼‍♀️ turned up this morning to let the cleaners in and we had no power and no water supply. The water had been switched off, when we finally found the stop clock and turned it on one of the pipes started gushing out onto the kitchen floor and half flooded the room.
Poor cleaners had switched clients around to fit me in so I felt awful, they managed to get general stuff done and luckily the power came back on around 1 hour later. We managed to stop the pipe from leaking by tightening the valves.

Returned a few hours later and it was leaking again all under the kitchen cabinets, managed once again to stop it but I suspect it will play up again tonight. It's currently got a bucket underneath in case.
We have no choice but to stay there tonight so going to just appreciate the fact we have our very own home in this freezing cold weather and we are a heck of a lot more fortunate than plenty others out there even to have a roof over our heads.

Solicitors will be getting a phone call first thing Monday morning while we use the weekend to sort out the issues.

Now someone pass me the wine and pizza please 😂

Sorry to hear that, sounds like a nightmare!
At least you are in, and you are on top of things with your solicitors.

This does highlight the need to obtain posession from the minute you are the legal owner. There is no way of telling if this issue was pre or post ownership, and you may find your insurance company (if you use it) may ask a lot of questions around the moving in dates.

Chin up, and I am sure it will sort it self soon.

I was going to guess they'd left it in a state. Happened to us back in the Spring for my in-laws house. I usually like a challenge but it was minging. 12 hours late giving us the keys. My in-laws would have gone spare if they had moved in that day. Fortunately we had time to get it more presentable. Weirdly it was fine on viewing.

Enjoy your new home. 🏡👍

SilverHairedCat · 10/12/2021 18:07

Utter bastards.
Keep up with the videos and photos, sounds like you're going to need as much evidence as possible with these CF.

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 10/12/2021 18:11

Send them invoices for all cleaning and rubbish removal costs. Court if necessary..

newnamefor2021 · 10/12/2021 18:28

What absolutely piss takers! Houses are meant to be left clean and vacant. Take lots of photos. Keep receipts from cleaning etc.

How horrible are some people. What time did you get the keys finally?

minniep · 10/12/2021 18:42

You poor thing OP it sounds awful and really stressful. I've no advice but massive congratulations on your new home . we also had a nightmare with the seller from hell when we bought our house . However almost five years on and it's the best thing we ever did and we've made a lovely home and are so happy here.

ilovesouthlondon · 12/12/2021 16:21

Similar thing happened to me on completion day...the new previous owner refused to hand over his keys after his wife gave me her set of keys. He announced "I'm coming back tomorrow to finish packing, so I'm keeping these"!

ilovesouthlondon · 12/12/2021 16:23

Oh and left a load of rubbish in the house (including plenty of dirty cotton buds tucked under the carpets) and in the garden that they were obligated to move.

Knittingbaker · 13/12/2021 18:17

@prayingforrainbows How have you gotten on with the solicitors?? I hope you have managed to sort out the plumbing and it’s starting to feel more like home
