Does anyone have shutters and curtains?

On the same window that is. Our bedroom is at the front of the house and if we get dressed in the bedroom we have to have the curtains shut. We are looking at getting shutters but we have some decorative stained glass at the top of the windows and I was wondering about cafe style shutters - we wouldn't block the stained glass and could get dressed by tiltling the shutters, I also like total blackout in summer which I know shutters can't provide so doubling up seems like an option.

Our house has those kind of shutters installed by the previous owner on all the front windows which includes our bedroom. We need room to be pitch black to sleep but curtains wouldn't look right. What we've done is make our own blackout blind instead which is fixed to the shutter frame with velcro. Works brilliantly!

Order roll of blackout fabric from amazon, black one side and cream/white the other (for the room side). Two rolls of adhesive velcro, one fixed to the shutter frame all the way round, and the other on the fabric. We just put them up each night and take down each morning. Fold them up and store away in ottaman.

I have blinds in my bedroom for this reason.

We haven’t got them on our shutters but some companies do offer a blackout option
I think they have draught excluder type little brushes on the louvres that block light when closed

That said, our regular shutters are pretty blackout when they are all tightly shut. Certainly as much as Roman or roller blinds once you take into account that they always let a small amount in at the edges

We had shutter blinds fitted in our previous house and liked them very much (so much so we are buying them for our new house).
At the time my OH said she wanted the curtains removed as they were no-longer required however I wanted to keep them to provide a cosy feel, of course I was overruled! As it turns out the blinds do not completely shut out the rising or setting sun so when we move into our new house (in the next couple of months) we will be having both shutter blinds and blackout curtains, complete overkill (and of course very expensive) but gives us more options.

I have!
We had just the shutters initially, for a couple of years.
I worried the windows would look too cluttered with curtains as well, but I think they look fine, they maybe looked a little too minimalist before (mine have a hidden tilt rod, so quite clean cut).

Thaks all, @ElvisPresleysSideburns I was worried about it looking cluttered but also felt it may look too stark with just the shutters. It's a 1930's house so minimalist doesn't work (I can't pull off the minamilist look anyway!).

Yes I've had that - living room in last house had half shutters in bay window and full length curtains and a bedroom before had the same. My current place will have Roman blinds. It looks absolutely fine. I don't close the curtains as I like to wake up to daylight ( when there is any in the morning)!

I have half shutters upstairs & downstairs at the front of the house with curtains I don’t think it looks cluttered, wanted the option of drawing the curtains when it’s gets really cold, as they are lined & interlined so really do help keep the warmth in the room.
