Anyone with a breakfast/appliance cupboard?

If so what depth of cupboard do you have and how much work surface in front? Standard appears to be a 450mm cupboard so there is then 150mm of work surface in front of cupboard when closed.

My husband is concerned that is still not enough to pull toaster forward and use it safely without the shelf being above the toaster. Anyone with tray/device to pull it out further? Our microwave is small so we could have a shallower cupboard. Thanks

Not helpful to you really but it's a bump at least! - ours doesn't have a counter in front, only on the inside, and flush with with our run of floor to ceiling cabinets which house our ovens etc, so the same depth as them. It's facing the island so my husband just pops the toaster out onto the island when he's using it.* We keep the toaster on a little tray so no mess with crumbs etc.

*my husband thinks I do the same but i just use it while it's still in the press and don't tell him... whoops

I have one and use a coffee machine and toaster, both sit under a shelf and I don't pull them out any further. No issues.

Mine is similar to the picture but I don’t keep my toaster in it! Instead of the open space at the bottom of the cupboard, I have pull out storage drawers made from oak. I rather agree with your DH, 150 clearance isn’t enough and the toaster heat will foul the shelf. However a unit this size will look very large if not set back (450 deep). Even if you make it deeper, the shelf inside might still foul the toaster. One idea might be to have a less deep shelf above the toaster. Or not have that shelf at all maybe?

I’ve seen one with a pull out shelf. Hoping to get one next year when we do the kitchen but can’t quite think beyond Christmas yet.

Thank you

My husband would be horrified at you Alfixn!!! He wouldnt be happy at any use of toaster in the cupboard even without shelf above - far too dangerous.

I could have 400 deep cupboard so i get 200 worksurface in front but no one seems to do this. Do you think it would look OK visually?

Definitely plan to try to have a pull out tray but never seen one though some of the kitchen suppliers mention them but never show them in any of their photos or showrooms! If anyone has one please can you post. Needaholiday - do you know where you saw it? Thanks

Check Pinterest...but reserve a few hours as you go down the rabbit hole of fabulous kitchen ideas!

I have an accidental one that contains breakfast cereals, croissants, our slow cooker and an extension lead.

But I don't think that's what you looking for OP. Grin

Our whole unit is actually 600mm. So a 600mm worktop. We got around it by making the internal shelves 300mm.
That way nice deep worktop, and don’t hit head on the shelves whilst using, and toaster can be pulled out as 300mm to play with

kitchenskitchen · 09/12/2021 13:17

Thanks but my husband would never allow toaster to be used in a cupboard even if shelves were 300 as the top of the cupboard would be above it as 600 deep - he has spent too much of his working life with fire insurance! I get to choose everything else aside from safety issues so it is not too bad.

I have looked at loads of gorgeous kitchens online but everyone has the toaster under a shelf - as i have pointed out to my husband!

Anyone got/seen photo or link to a pull out toaster tray in the cupboard.

Thanks

I really don’t see the issue here.
In our pantry cupboard there’s 110cm from where the toaster is standing to the top of the cupboard ‘shelf’, as the shelves are 30cm there’s nothing above.

In our normal kitchen, the toaster just lived on the worktop, where most peoples does. There’s only 57cm there before the standard wall cupboard. There was no worktop in kitchen that have no wall cupboard above at 57cm which is what you see in almost every house.
It’s 110cm in breakfast cupboard, almost double the height

A bit like this picture on this thread. You can see the shelf inside is about half the depth of the cupboard. So just have the toaster at front

saleorbouy · 09/12/2021 15:01

Why not put the toaster on a shelf with runners so it has the space required above it. Or put a
Some form of heat shield (metal or glass) on the underside of the shelf over the toaster.

A pull out shelf idea, could you do this across the whole bottom of the unit.

goldenshoe · 09/12/2021 17:43

Totally unhelpful, but I stayed in a tiny flat in Japan that had an appliance cupboard with a little built-in extractor in the shelf above above the toaster and kettle shelf. It was the tiniest kitchen ever but such a good solution!

kitchenskitchen · 09/12/2021 23:23

some interesting ideas with that link on pinterest thank you

Caspian - my husband would be equally horrified at anyone using a toaster under their wall cupboards so I cant use that argument!

still i get to choose everything else so i can live with this requirement
