Moving to Leicestershire

Hello everyone,

I posted about last week moving out of London. I have now seen a place I am seriously considering but I don't know anything about it. So, I am coming back to you all for advice.

Leicestershire seems to tick most of my boxes. My son will be able to continue his football and the house prices seems to be within my budget.

The areas though which seems to be attracted to me are, Melton Mowbray and wigston. It would be nice to hear what your views are.

I would also need to travel to travel to London occasionally, so having access to a train station is ideal.
Many thanks

It depends what you want. I'd go Rugby over Leicester any day, but over a village? No - hence suggesting Swinford etc as you get the best of both worlds.

I like Rugby Town centre. A lot of big stores have closed and moved to Elliotts Field, but that's more convenient anyway, and I like the cafes, restaurants and independent shops that remain and are opening. The old Woolworths is being turned into flats, McDonald's has moved out to the edge and there's a fair amount of regeneration happening too. Plus we're only 20 minutes from Fosse Park, easy trains to Birmingham etc.

I’d go to Leicester itself. Oadby, knighton, Clarendon park if you can afford it. It’s a great small city.

Chimley · 05/12/2021 20:14

Having worked in both I would say Leicestershire over Rugby. As you say Rugby town centre is terrible. Just compare that shopping centre with High Cross!

You probably need to decide which station you want to live near and that will guide you. A more rural station e.g. Market Harborough or the main Leicester station, in which case you need to factor in travel time to the station. Narborough has a station and is near the motorway and it has new build estates.

Chimley · 05/12/2021 20:16

Depends on your tastes (this is definitely not a new build) but fits your budget

Oh wow this is lovely 😍😍😍

Not sure what kind of area you are looking for, but I moved to Loughborough from London and it is ok for the East Midlands (not the most exciting part of the country). I wanted to be in a relatively diverse area I could get around easily without driving so it was a choice between Leicester itself - prob Clarendon Park area - or Loughborough for us. Went for Loughborough because there was more within easy walking distance of the station.

I’ve lived in the county for 33 years after moving from London. I have lived in Stoneygate which is very nice, but you won’t get much for your budget. I now live in a village not far from Market Harborough.
I wouldn’t choose Wigston, but visit and judge for yourself. School wise I’d go to Market Harborough, outstanding schools, a lovely county town with lots of things to do and lovely shops. There’s a station with direct trains to London in under an hour. Also a good selection of house types.

I live in Barrow Upon Soar and love it, it has a really nice community feel. There's a train station in the village and a thriving football club and good schools

I commuted to London for 5 years from Loughborough station which took about 10 mins from home.

Thank you everyone- I have arranged two viewings next week in MH. But I have come a cross some new build houses in Hinckley. Is this any good? TIA

Unless you have a railcard, Market Harborough to London on the train is excessively expensive compared to Rugby to London. Plus they are always doing some work at the weekends for some reason or another so you end up with the bus replacements.

catmum789 · 06/12/2021 16:13

@Eve1989 have you thought about Oakham/Rutland there are plenty of new builds there, my work headquarters is based in Whitehall in London so I get the train sometimes I get it to Peterborough and then to London, takes just over an hour. House prices are more expensive in Rutland but you pay for the area, it's an amazing area to bring up children. It's quite central too, 20 mins from Stamford (a gorgeous town) and 30 minutes to Corby/Peterborough in the car.

I have also lived in Leciester and wouldn't recommend Wigston, traffic is awful I know about 4 people who have had their cars and vans broken in to from the area.

If you are in Wigston I assume the nearest hospital with A&E is Leicester Royal Infirmary - absolute nightmare to get to and I personally don't like that hospital I much prefer Peterborough which is the closest to Oakham should you ever need to attend the hospital.

Melton is a decent place, easy to drive around I think but it is getting a bit dated but I assume as there are new build developments here there and everywhere things may get updated? Also Melton has a great market day where people come on coaches to attend! I like to make a special trip to Melton on a Tuesday as it's only 20 mins from Oakham.

Let us know how you get on with the house hunting, best of luck!!

Not if it’s occasional visits and you book ahead. Plenty of saver deals on selected train times.

Hello,
Thanks for taking out the time to respond to my thread. Can I ask if Oakham is in Leicestershire? Just not heard of it before. Thank you

@Eve1989 so Oakham is classed as Leicestershire but the county is Rutland (smallest county in England) used to have their own RU postcode until it was taken over by Leicester and then Rutland gained its independence back but unfortunately not the postcode!
