What is Llay, Wrexham like?

We're moving from the South East because prices have gone crazy. As FTB'yers we don't have equity stashed in a property. So of course a huge deposit means we're much better off looking away from the south entirely and tbh we're pretty happy to get away from overpopulated, expensive shoe box homes, speed cameras... well anyway I digress.

We have found a lovely house with what seems like a lovely school just round the corner in Llay, Wrexham.

On the surface of it, it seems like a lovely village.

Are we in for any unpleasant surprises?

We are a mixed race couple (I'm white, OH is black, daughter mixed race and baby due to arrive in the next few weeks).

Upon our visit it seemed friendly, no weird side glances or anything to make us feel uncomfortable.

Anyone know/live in the area? White or black? Is it as lovely as I think?

It doesn't matter if we are the only non white family, that's OK, just don't want to feel unwelcome. 😕

Would also like to know what this area is like as we are also looking at a new build development in Llay as one of the potential areas for us to move to. Current based in the North East but relocating for work. Hope you get some insight. :-)

I live quite near to Llay and it’s a nice village. Close to Wrexham which won’t win any beauty contests but has all the normal things. Close to Chester too which is a lovely city. Be aware Wales does do things quite differently in the education system and even stamp duty bands differ.
Regarding social mix-it is very white but there’s definitely no reputation for narrow mindedness and racism. We’ve found most people to be pretty decent-but as we're white we wouldn’t have direct experience anyway. But we’ve never had any unfriendliness in the Welsh speaking areas towards us, everyone is very accepting. And if you like the outdoors, you’ll be in for a nice surprise.

Gresford, Marford and Rossett all “naicer” than LLay - and
are on a direct bus route to Chester. But LLay and Borras nicer than most of Wrexham town (which has some very run down areas) . Some people in Llay send their kids to All Saints primary school in Gresford. But it is secondary schools that are more of an issue. Ambitious parents usually try for Bishops Heber in Malpas (England) but it depending on numbers you are by no means guaranteed a place as it’s out of catchment.

There’s a nice little library and a lovely country park in LLay but no good cafes/pubs/restaurants. The GP practice is generally good. A new Aldi is being built and lots of new housing which might revitalise it a bit.

You’ll get a bit more for your money in Llay but I’d go for the Gresford-Rossett area if possible

Just realised that the new housing estates stretch out towards the Croes Howell restaurant so that might count as a LLay restaurant - but am pretty sure the restaurant (which I’d think of as being on its own out in the countryside) identifies as being in Rossett, which probably tells you what I mean about the other three villages being a bit more aspirational!

Would also echo pp comments that it’s a very white area but seems friendly and pleasant. Lots of peop,e have moved to the area from Liverpool/Manchester/Cheshire when they have kids as house prices are so much cheaper so there definitely isn’t an incomers v. locals vibe,

Agree, Rossett is very picturesque. A very nice pub on the river. You need a healthy budget though. Have you considered Mold/Mynydd Isa? Good high schools, near gorgeous countryside and still affordable and within striking distance of Chester.

I don’t know Llay well specifically but grew up not far away.
You could be the only non white family but I wouldn’t expect racism.
The broader area is good, Wrexham is not that nice but has decent amenities. Chester not far at all.

Agree gresford and Rossett much nicer but houses will cost a lot more!

Be aware that the nhs and healthcare are different and right now healthcare in the area is pretty poor. My parents’ gp practice literally has no resident gp (7 vacancies!) and waiting times for treatment are long.
Welsh education is fine but your children will have to learn Welsh.
