Keep cloakroom or more cupboard space?

We are renovating. Downstairs has a small bathroom (shower/toilet/sink) towards the back- if you walk through the kitchen and utility to get to it. This is currently a garden room, but could be a self-contained granny flat in the future for MIL if needed. There is also a small, understair toilet- closer to the lounge/dining area.

We are debating turning the cloakroom toilet into either storage, or a tiny walk-in larder for the kitchen.

Are 2 downstairs toilets excessive? As a guest, would it be odd to walk through the kitchen then utility to get to the down stairs toilet?

I'd keep it. If I've understood the layout properly it's off the utility and can be accessed from outdoors quite quickly? Ideal for warming up and removing mud after dog walks, gardening, mostly any sport..? And as you say, great for annexe in the future. Or it's currently prime real estate for a home gym if you're into that too Grin

Sorry, the layout is rather odd and hard to explain. Its the under stair toilet we are thinking of removing. This is close to the lounge and dining area, whereas the other toilet is via the kitchen, then utility to get to and towards the back of the house.

I wouldn't expect two downstairs loos, and it's perfectly normal for a downstairs loo to be accessed via a utility room.

I suppose the only thing making me think you should keep the understairs cloakroom one is what you said about a granny flat for MIL. It would certainly undermine the idea of her having her own space and privacy if her bathroom doubled as the downstairs loo for the whole fily and visitors!

Fily? Family!

Oh I see! Yeah I'd still keep them both. One by the front door, one near the back. Makes perfect sense to me

I would get the downstairs understairs toilet capped in such a way that if required in future it could be reinstated. Additional storage will be much more useful then basing decisions on a future maybe.

I think that I would keep the understair toilet as it is handier for guests and stops them traipsing through the kitchen and utility.
Why can't you store elsewhere e.g. in the garden room? Or a porch.

I would lean towards having an understairs loo so that the one through the utility could be for MILs exclusive use if she did move in but it really depends on how much you need the storage. If it's a really small space can you fit enough storage in there to make it feel worthwhile.

Keep the under stairs toilet and the other for future use by mil. I would not want to walk through your utility to find a toilet (and pressure on you to keep it tidy)! If not needed by mil I'd get rid of that toilet.

Keep the understairs lav. No question about it.
