Do I need a fire screen for a real gas fire?

Just that really - it's a real flame gas fire. Do I need a screen in front of it or not (not got young children to keep away from it by the way).

Nope

Hellocatshome · 02/12/2021 18:19

Why would you think you would?

flapjackfairy · 02/12/2021 18:19

Do you mean a fire guard ? . If real flames then surely you would ?

Thedogisdrivingmemad · 02/12/2021 18:30

I mean the flat or curved mesh type screen, rather than the type of thing that stops small children or pets getting near the flames.

If you don't have small children, cats or dogs, then no need at all.

flapjackfairy · 02/12/2021 18:50

Oh sorry misread your op. Thought you said you had kids. Sorry ignore me !

Depends on your lifestyle, surely?
If you have a penchant for doing the dance of the 7 veils, while wafting your polyester scarves and hankies around, or you frequently get legless with alcohol and find yourself waking up with your face in the grate - it would be a good idea to have a fireguard.
Big people burn just as easily as children and animals.
If you're as clean living as meShock, you won't need one.

Thedogisdrivingmemad · 02/12/2021 20:49

Ok - sounds as if we can do without it but good to have a reminder to be sensible near the fire.

Don't put a mirror over the mantlepiece.

In the days when open fires were common, horrible burning accidents were common, mostly from dresses catching fire.

Thedogisdrivingmemad · 02/12/2021 23:15

I won't...and nor shall I dance vigorously in a floaty polyester dress...

I have a curved mesh screen around my gas fire.
I grew up with open wood fires that always had some sort of fire guard in front of them.
When I was little, back in the 70s, the fire guard screwed onto the wall!
Now I'm an adult, being next to a flame without some sort of protection just doesn't feel safe to me.
I guess that's my childhood catching up with me!

I don't have children, the cat prefers behind the sofa under the radiator & I don't waft around in polyester long dresses...

Yes, if one of your older relatives keeps trying to chuck Quality Street wrappers and bits of satsuma peel on it. Grin
