These new-fangled vertical radiators. As efficient as the old fashioned type?

Can they be as efficient and keep a room as warm as the old fashioned under the window type?

I remember someone explaining to me that one of the ways the horizontal ones work, is that becuase they are set under windows, they heat up the cold air leaking in and that is more efficient than placing them on a wall without a window.

But these vertical ones obviously don't go under windows, so miss that bit of efficiency. How do they compensate? Are they as efficient?

I had them in a house thirty years ago and modern double glazing means the effect of putting them under a window is much reduced.

It depends what you're replacing I suppose, but replacing an old single radiator with anything better will help. We completely solved the problem of our freezing kitchen and utility by replacing an old double radiator with a tall "designer" one. Neither was under the window. We did pay a lot of attention to the heat output rating thingy though, to get the most heat out. I expect you can get cheaper ones that look similar but don't deliver as much.

Replacing that radiator had an amazing effect on how much time we spend in the kitchen, and it made our utility into somewhere we can actually dry clothes.

Well I'm not sure vertical radiators are "new fangled" Grin, they've been around for ages, but certainly ours (white Acova column radiators, as recommended by a structural engineer and repeatedly recommended on MN) are way more efficient that the old-style radiators they replaced (double fin horizontal). As a pp says, you need to work out the BTUs you need (plenty of online calculators). We originally had them in the extension and are gradually replacing all the radiators in the house with new radiators (not always vertical, but different sizes of coumn radiators).

Yes verticals are just as efficient at heating (and very lovely to stand bedside to warm your entire length on cold morning).

White ones are more efficient than metallic coloured ones, so if that's part of your consideration criteria it might be worth looking at (I forget why it is, it's 12 years since we put our new-fangled vertical rads in), but you can see it's true from comparing heat output figures from the same models in 2 colours.

We have 2 in our house and they chuck out plenty of heat.

We have vertical panel radiators, and they absolutely blast the heat out. Much more efficient than the old ones we've replaced. You need the right size rad for your room though (although I'm sure you know that already).

Phew, that's a relief.

I want one but was a bit dubious, sounds like it's all good. Will try and find a calculation site.

This is mine, and the reason the stool is there is because I sit on it with my back to the radiator and it is heavenly. In fact, I’m sitting there right now as I type. I have an open plan kitchen/diner/sitting area and it is the warmest place in the house. We also have a radiator under the window which might help heat the rooms as well.

Any recommendations for a one of the radiators mentioned?
Thanks in advance
