What is more useful? 600mm large larder or 2 x 300mm larders?

Dilemma.

600mm will fit everything, thinking large cereal packets etc.
300mm will mean more definition, less trawling through to see where things are. But mgiht be more restricted in terms of fitting stuff in.
Both are pull out larders.

Which is better?

There's only one way to find out....

2 x 300. Every time. My mum had a 600 and you can see everything but you can't reach it! Infuriating.

trumpisagit · 29/11/2021 10:38

We have 300mm deep cupboards under our breakfast bar. They are a great use of space and I much prefer them to the deep ones where everything gets lost at the back.

TuftyMarmoset · 29/11/2021 10:56

I’d go with 600mm, it’s more versatile in case you get something big you want to store. I think with smaller ones you end up with more wasted space as well where you can’t fit things next to each other.

600mm with pull out drawers.

ScreamingBeans · 29/11/2021 15:23

LOL

No consensus

Are we talking width or depth?

Justcannotbearsed · 29/11/2021 15:54

We got a 300mm pull out larder with cages - I like it in that it's really easy to see stuff - keep bottles, chutney, stuff like that in it.

But I miss our old 600mm pull out larder, I found it really easy to see stuff and find it.

We did get a 600mm cupboard with drawers -but ended up distributing the drawers around the lower half of 3 cupboards because if they were in the top of the full height cabinet you couldn't see what was in them. Unlike the wire drawers in old cupboard.

I hope that makes sense.

In short I wish we'd gone for a 600 mm one with wire pull out holders.

helpmum2003 · 29/11/2021 15:59

If you are having the pull out wire cage type where all drawers are pulled out together I would go for 2x300 as with the larger ones they can drop due to the weight. We had a 400 which did it a bit

Are we talking width or depth?
We're talking width Bruce. They will all be 600 depth.

I have 1 300mm one with wire baskets that all pull out together. I really love it. But I wish it was bigger! I might feel better if I had 2 of them though. Sadly, no space!

HoldmecloseTonyDanza · 29/11/2021 17:05

I had a 600 wide in my old kitchen, problem was it was too heavy when full so it was heavy to pull out and also some of the baskets sagged.
With 2x 300 you'd have better weight distribution.

Quinque · 29/11/2021 17:08

I would definitely recommend going for 2x300s. A single 600 when loaded will be heavy to pull open so there's more chance of it eventually sagging or breaking. 300s will be lighter. You can also sort the food you're storing, eg tins, cereal, pasta and rice in one, oil, spreads and baking stuff in the other.

Countmeout · 29/11/2021 17:08

They are awful to clean either way.( no help at all I know) I had 600 . Is 300 not tricky to get things into? I had an under counter pull ou thingy and it was useless

justasking111 · 29/11/2021 17:10

Two x300. Love mine would have another if there was room. Easy to find everything

trumpisagit · 29/11/2021 17:35

Oh well, I was talking depth. If width 600mm

I've got a 600 with pull out drawers. Top ones are baskets and lighter so can see what's in them - tend to stick bags of pasta up there. I think it could be a pull-out larder but think it would be too heavy. Ours is packed and can see everything in there. I try to keep drawers in categories so a baking stuff drawer, a spices and condiments drawer, pulses and rices together etc.

ScreamingBeans · 29/11/2021 19:42

thanks all, I think I've come down on the side of 2 x 300

I also think 600 with drawers. Mesh pull out larders seem a bit of a headache.

NotMeNoNo · 30/11/2021 18:39

I vote separate drawers you don't lose width to two sets of runners.

FuzzyPuffling · 30/11/2021 19:10

I've just got rid of my pull out larder and swapped it for a big cupboard and drawers. I hated it - it squeaked, had lots of wasted space, if anything dropped down the back it was lost for ever, it was impossible to keep really clean and I was delighted to see it go.

ReviewingTheSituation · 01/12/2021 13:20

We have a 600 with baskets on the door and baskets that come forward when you open the door. Previously had a 300 pull out. The 600 is a million times better - you can get SO MUCH in it, and the baskets aren't that deep (because of the ones on the doors needing to be accommodated when it's closed) so nothing gets lost at the back.

Door baskets are great for small things (herbs, spices, baking stuff like treacle, syrup etc) and main baskets have all the dried goods on them (pastas, rices, grains, tea/coffee, flours) and the top (hard to reach basket is perfect for both very infrequently used things, and things which are not yet in main circulation (new bottles of oil, jars of sauces etc). I wouldn't design a kitchen without one now!
