Hi ladies I’m autistic so please bare with me and hi I’m new to mumsnet.
Basically today i accident melted my electric heater in my room , the bit of plastic melted and it made a mark on my mattress and quilt. Do you think the fumes from the burnt plastic are deadly ? And if so what can I do ? I’ve binned everything that got melted and the heater but I’m worried I’ve released Gas into the air.

Have you opened the windows to let the gas out?

Boonlark · 24/11/2021 11:22

Do you mean an electric blanket, or an electric fan heater?

Mickeymouse234 · 24/11/2021 11:24

Yes , but I probably directly breathed it in :(

No, they won't be deadly. Just open a window for a while to air the room.

I'd be more concerned about the fire risk of the heater being close enough to the bed to leave scorch marks. That's far more dangerous.

Electric fan heater

If it was deadly you wouldn't be here to type. You're fine. As PP said though, look at your fire risks. Get a smoke alarm and a CO detector in your room ASAP.

Mickeymouse234 · 24/11/2021 11:31

Why a co detector ? Could it have released that ?

Health & safety professional here! There would have been a very very small amount of fumes which would have dispersed quickly in the air, so you’re not at risk. Burnt gas stinks but that doesn’t mean there are harmful amounts of chemicals, it’s just a stink.
Do get a smoke alarm though, if you don’t have one already.

Mickeymouse234 · 24/11/2021 11:42

Great thank you , stupid question but there is a bit of melted plastic on carpet is this harmful ? X

The fumes are fine, just air the room to get rid of the smell.

More importantly, why was the heater close enough to your mattress/quilts to leave a burn mark. They should be placed on a firm steady surface with room on all sides for airflow.

Mickeymouse234 · 24/11/2021 11:51

Hi there’s no burn mark just on the mattress it’s a little melted but no burn x

You will be absolutely fine. There is no danger from the melted plastic at all and any fumes won't have harmed you.

If you can get an electric oil-filled radiator, it usually gets no hotter than a teapot, and I strongly believe it will be much safer.
