HELP stop tap not working!

My bathroom sink tap started to run at around 11 pm. So I went to turn off the valve under the sink. The valve when quarter turned sprayed water out. Got it turned again and now the valve is slowly dripping water down a hole to my living room ceiling.
So, I go down to the kitchen. Turn off the valve/stop cock under the sink. Go up to bathroom. Turn on bath taps full on (don't want to meddle with sink valve anymore, so thought I would drain down using bath taps first...). I've run the bath tap for 10 min....its no slower.

Do I have a second stop tap in my bathroom somewhere???

The kitchen taps both stopped when I turned the under kitchen sink stop cock.

What do I do????

TIA

Have you got an old fashioned airing cupboard? Often there is a stop cock in there for the hot water. Look on the run of pipes. Poor you!

Wtfdoipick · 24/11/2021 00:34

Do you have a hot water tank? if you do then it will take longer to drain the water from the system

MrsDevery · 24/11/2021 00:34

It's okay... problem solved...I stopped the under kitchen sink valves...not the actual stop tap...its late at night...

Well done you! Star Star

A check valve is only pennies to buy
If you have a couple of adjustable spanners, it easy to replace
Loads of videos on youtube

@AdaColeman I'm taking all the gold stars for this one! Last year I had a leaking kitchen tap and I went to pieces! I need a blue Peter badge this time!

@Felix125 I tried to change the kitchen tap last year, got the spanners etc and couldn't undo the nuts, had to get a plumber in. I have a fear I'll cause a flood and massive damage etc, so probably not as persistent as I could be?

Just don't want you to spend £150 on a job that that would only be about £1.50 in parts.

Its a lot easier than changing taps. Just hold the check valve in the middle with one spanner and undo the nut with the other. Then repeat for the other nut. Replace with the new valve and Bob's your uncle!

Don't buy a cheap stop valve cos they fail really easily, as you've found out. Go to a proper plumber's merchants and get a good one. Shouldn't be much more that £1.50 each.

In my experience, the olive is usually crushed onto the pipe and has to be cut off, so often not so straightforward.
