Where to get fire doors?

I need to change my interior doors to fire doors for my loft conversion to pass building control. I prefer to keep the 1930s (one over three panels) style doors but the fire door version are so expensive!

Can you recommend somewhere to get good quality and good value fire doors?

Thanks a lot!

We had to do the same in our last house. We got ours from Todd Doors. They were the traditional style in oak and we treated them with oil. I think they might have been these ones www.todd-doors.co.uk/dx-1930-fd30-fire-door-2

Thanks @SollaSollew! The door from your link looks nice! Were you happy with Todd Doors' quality and service?

Yes definitely. They were really good quality and they looked lovely in the flesh. Don’t know where you live but they have a big showroom in Twickenham. This is kind of a picture of one In our house

Sorry it’s from when we were doing the bathroom!!

We had to get fire doors a few years ago, I’ve just checked back and we also got them from Todd Doors. They’re really nice doors, very good quality. I tend to shop around a lot for things so I’m presuming they were an ok price too!
I remember looking at Wickes too but I think they didn’t have them in stock or didn’t have the right size.

Be warned, they are VERH heavy!

How much is "so expensive?"

Paint grade is cheaper than wood finish

KittenCatcher · 23/11/2021 10:34

Howdens do them if you have one nearby

Thank you everyone! The doors that looks most similar to existing ones, white primed, are about £180 each, and obviously I will have to pay for them all to be rehung too. I was hoping that building control would accept mains wired smoke alarms in every room but nope.

I guess I can buy blank doors or cheaper moulded ones but I do like the original style so will just bite the bullet.

"about £180 each"

where?

Before the pandemic I was getting this one for about £80 when buying five or more, I see it is now £115, but I think £97 at B&Q.

It's not the same as the one you want, but it's made by Premdor, a major British maker and they have a large range of doors, though I don't see the type you want. Howdens own a joinery works and have have a similar range and there are a couple of other big makers.

(don't get the "woodgrain" version, it looks like fake woodgrain)

Bear in mind that the outlets that mostly sell to the trade publish a "retail" price for the mug punter, the trade buyer gets a discount that might be around 60%

If you find a good local carpenter, s/he will know where to get doors, linings and other components.

BTW I strongly recommend lift-off hinges for fore doors as they are very heavy.

Thanks @PigletJohn for the information! The doors are £180 from Todd Doors. I guess I am rather attached to the style, so for a one off expense I think I will go with it. I am hoping to use keep my original ones for the bathrooms though so at least the style would match. Will remember your advice about the hinges!
