I have rotten skirting, do I take it off, then get new floor or, get new floor and then do it?

Me too! Sorry @Naughtynovembertree but hopefully this'll bump the thread and you'll get useful answers

My problem is 3 different types of skirting board in one room!!

Naughtynovembertree · 20/11/2021 08:45

Mine is a mess.
So I should take skirting off.. Prepare area if that's a thing? Floor then skirting?
It would be so much easier for me to replace skirting if I can take it in my hand!

It depends why it’s rotten. If it’s damp related then the damp needs sorting first if it’s because a dog weed on it for 20 years then floor then skirting boards.

Old skirting off, new floor down, new skirting on. If you don't remove the old skirting first, you will need to put some kind of beading down between the flooring ending and the skirting.

Usually floor and then skirting. What flooring? Carpet is a bit different to laminate for example.

And yes as a pp says, why is it damp?

Naughtynovembertree · 20/11/2021 08:54

I think it's just because it's where bin is always been a bit of a neglected corner by back door?
Nothing else looks rotten just this wood.
(I hope!!).

Floor will be amtico.

We did floor then skirting board

ShowOfHands · 20/11/2021 09:07

Oh yes you did say amtico in your title! We've just put down amtico in one room. Def floor first. Don't do what my in-laws did and put down amtico on the entire ground floor and then drop a dumbbell on it a day later. The dent has been there for 13yrs...

I think you need to look at the damp, especially as it's on a corner in an external wall. Don't assume.

I would replace skirting then get floor fitted to new, painted/finished skirting. Then, if any of new floor needs replacing it is easy to take up and replace one plank or tile.
