Urgghhh seller now ‘can’t find rental”

Kate88Kate · 19/11/2021 14:29

Almost at the point of exchange and now our seller says they can’t find rental as they had previously agreed. They’ve just put an offer in on a house so if they are successful we now have a massive delay as they start the process from scratch. So annoying Angry

sounds like they a not a committed seller.

so renew your search for a new home.

make sure they know you do not plan to wait indefinitely.

SleighBells21 · 19/11/2021 16:08

Can they not live with family for a little while?

MalbecandToast · 19/11/2021 16:09

To be fair, they may be telling the truth there is a massive lack of rentals here where we are and our vendor had to move in with family as they couldn't get anything!

gonnabeok · 19/11/2021 16:11

Could they do an air bnb lots of people are doing that for a few months

PomegranateQueen · 19/11/2021 16:13

I had this issue, I started up my search again and I am glad I did, the seller had the option to stay with family and didn't take it. We prefer the house we have now! The rental market in some areas is manic at the moment, you could be waiting a very long time.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 19/11/2021 16:15

They might well be telling the truth... It's crazy to get a rental where I am; they are in massively short supply and the price has gone up by 40% compared to last year. Not everyone has the option to stay with family, either, especially not without a set end date... I wouldn't.

That said, you'd have hoped that they'd either made it clear that they intended to move into rented but hadn't sorted it yet; or have sorted it before, so you knew where you stood when you entered the chain.

Is there other houses that you're interested in that you could view?

TokyoSushi · 19/11/2021 16:17

I've usually found 'we'll go into rented' is a 'the cheques in the post' of home moving!

Pinkdelight3 · 19/11/2021 18:21

I've never yet known someone genuinely go into rental. It's usually a fib and the buyer has to suck it up. Sorry.

niki26 · 19/11/2021 19:57

When we had the offer accepted on our onwards purchase we were cautious because we knew that they still had to find somewhere - plus they were moving down South so were only viewing at weekends!

Therefore I was relieved when their agent told me they'd found somewhere but it wouldn't be available for a few months and they didn't want to jeopardise the sale so they'd be going into rental. I knew the rental market was tough as well so didn't know what to expect. We decided we'd offer to pay for a months rent to try and give some kind of incentive. Anyway, we didn't even get to that stage as they found a rental to start 1st June - we wanted to get in for stamp duty exemption - and the whole chain actually all exchanged on the same day even though their completion for their purchase would be 2 1/2 months later.

So a real life story of a seller who said they'd go into rented, going into rented! A unicorn it seems!

Constance1 · 19/11/2021 20:38

Ahh we tried going into rental as our buyers were keen to make the June stamp duty deadline, but all the suitably sized houses in our town wanted minimum 24 month contracts with no break clause. So although we initially said we would go into rented we were not able to - we had assumed it would be easy to find somewhere, but we hadn't rented for over 10 years so we were obviously out of touch. Luckily our buyers waited for us. It might not be your sellers fault OP that you feel like you've been messed around.

Pottedpalm · 20/11/2021 00:28

We went into rental when our purchase fell through. Our buyers were very keen to move in and get settled before the new school year began so we put all our furniture into storage and found a furnished cottage to rent.

Dougieowner · 20/11/2021 01:28

We are in temporary accommodation following the sale of our home and we wait for our new build to be built. A bit of a faff (to say the least!) but it can be done
If you doubt them, continue looking elsewhere.

HeddaGarbled · 20/11/2021 01:33

It might be true - it’s rough at the moment.

coolpattern · 20/11/2021 09:27

It’s a pain in the bum to be honest. I can’t tell you how many rentals I was declined for as I have a dog!

I eventually found one at a
Massively inflated price and I snapped the agents hand off. My buyers were probably also concerned id not move out in time but I kept the agent updated honestly. I did not want to
Move in with family as it would be a massive squish.

Glasspen · 20/11/2021 10:44

Ours were supposed to be going into a rental - they found somewhere to buy - rental is still being mentioned if their purchase doesn't go through quickly - it was a condition of our ridiculously high offer price. This house-buying malarky is a nightmare.

Kate88Kate · 20/11/2021 13:25

It really is such a pain. A system which really doesn’t commit anyone to anything they say. Frustrating.
If we don’t buy this house we won’t move at all so it’s not a case of “look elsewhere” unfortunately

We've moved into rental to break the chain! It was a bit of an effort (2 kids, ao renting a 4 bed detached) but there is plenty of stuff on the market in our area (Hampshire). It depends what they are looking for and if they're willing to compromise. The tricky thing about rental though is having to sign up for a year with a 6 month break clause - many people are reluctant to do that once they realise how inflexible rental can be.

surreygirl1987 · 20/11/2021 14:01

Also the people we were buying from initially refused to go into rental (as it would "confuse the cat") so we pulled out. They were furious.

MalbecandToast · 20/11/2021 18:37

@surreygirl1987 lucky for you then, a friend of mine recently left her husband and needs a place for her and her 2 children and there are only 3 properties within 20 miles of work/school to let under £2k a month, 2 are flats and too small and a bungalow that looks like it was last updated in 1965 Sad

surreygirl1987 · 20/11/2021 21:52

Only 3 properties within a 20 mile radius?! Wow that's crazy! Where does she live?!

NoMoreTractors · 20/11/2021 21:57

It took me 5 months to find a rental.

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/11/2021 21:59

I’d find somewhere else to buy. It’s amazing how many sellers bugger about.

Heronwatcher · 20/11/2021 22:27

There is literally nothing to rent where I live, and what there is to rent want ridiculous deposits, 24 month contracts etc. Perhaps when your sellers offered to rent they didn’t realise this? Either way I guess you have the choice of waiting or walking away really, so you just have to weigh it up.

maofteens · 21/11/2021 04:10

There are places to rent where I live now, but not where I used to.
I pulled out of a purchase as I was told by EA seller would move in to rental (and I confirmed that before booking surveyor) only to be told the day I had the survey by another EA that no they needed to buy. After waiting three months I dropped out.
When I sold mine I went into a holiday let (initially thinking for two weeks but it ended up four holiday lets and three hotels in an 8 week period). I have kids and dogs too (the seller was a single person who was moving to be near a parent).
I had committed to sell in a certain time frame and honoured it, wish others would do the same.
