How big is your kitchen diner?

We are planning an extension right now. Might have to lose some space we thought we would have and I'm worried about whether we will have space for a big enough dining area as well as the kitchen. We currently only have a galley kitchen so I have no idea what works size-wise. How big is your kitchen diner if you have one? Is there room for a peninsular or island as well as a dining table? How many can you seat at your dining table? My mum comes with my brother's family so on occasions I will need to seat 10- all 6 of them plus us 4 (although can have an extendable table and only be squeezed on those occasions)

I think mine is about 23*13 but that includes a living area.

The kitchen bit is probably about 14 foot one side 16 foot the otherI have a table for 4 by the window than I turn and can (just) fit extended to seat 8.

It does seat 10 technically but since I have redone kitchen I don't think you could fit people on the end in the space.

However they will have to just sit on the sofa with a tray!

The 2 foot diff is where the peninsula sticks out - living area is the other side of it.

Draw it out. You should have a meter clearance between worktop and chair pulled out - so two metres between worktop and table. If it's a wall then one metre between table and wall (as long as you aren't walking between).

Thanks that's super helpful. Not sure we'll have room for a table now in that case. We're going to lose a metre and a half from the original plan. Feeling v sad.

Ours is about 5 metres square, so 16 feet 5 inches? The table seats ten. There's no living area as such, but there is an armchair so someone can sit with a drink and chat while you're cooking.

Could you do a dining nook or bench seating down one side?
While you need extra seating on occasion, you should plan for the every day to work effectively for your family.
What sort of shape will your room be?

Just discovered we might mot have to lose quite so much space so it might be possible. How do you work the space in a square @casper? If we don't lose the space ours ours might be almost square shaped 4.5m x 4.5m

I thought we were going to have to go down to 4.5 x 3.5m so I hadn't thought it would work but now holding out hope, but 4x5 m x 4.5 still seems a funny shape to work with. I figured we'd probably split it into kitchen/dining with a peninsula? Doesn't seem big enough for an island

My kitchen is 4.5 x 4.5
I have a u shaped kitchen and a table in the empty bit. There isn't room for a peninsula or an island but I don't want one.

Justcannotbearsed · 19/11/2021 07:44

Friends got a built in bench with storage in down one side of kitchen would that work?

CasperGutman · 19/11/2021 07:58

@Bloomsburyreader ours is a bit like the attached. It's an early version of the floor plan - we moved the hob to the wall in the end so the island is just prep space, 900mm wide with back-to-back standard and shallow cupboards under. We didn't see the point in having seating at the island when the table is just next to it. The table extends to seat ten comfortably.

If your room will be 4.5 metres wide, I think that could just about work. We could probably have lost a bit of space from the far side of the dining table by using a bench close to the wall - maybe built in as suggested above.

You need to start playing on a kitchen planner. The DIY Kitchens one is good.
Our kitchen is a similar length to yours but not as wide. We have a U shape with a built in bench seat and table at the far end.
My table is long and narrow (only 60cm rather than 90).

With the extra width in yours a small peninsula may work better but it all depends where your doors windows etc are and the path around the space.

Bloomsburyreader · 19/11/2021 12:03

Thanks for the advice and wonderful to see a floor plan of a similar space!

Ours was 4.5 X 2.8 but was cramped.

We had an unequal u shape of units with a table in the corner. Table could seat 5 (2 each side, 1 at the end).

I'll try and draw what I mean.

JunoMcDuff · 19/11/2021 13:50

Very rudimentary!

But shows you can do it in a small space.

We've extended now though.

8 x 4.5 metres - half is kitchen and half table and seating area

Titsywoo · 19/11/2021 18:52

There is a large island too (1.2x2m)
