New front door - too expensive

There seem so few options for inexpensive front door.
Ours is an old (horrible) PVC with some damage recently done to it and needs replacing urgently but we haven't got the cash currently.

Any ideas on where to get a front door that is secure, allows light in, won't cost thousands?

England (home counties)

PVC replacement is always going to be the cheapest- you’re probably looking at about £500-700 depending on where you are and what company you use.

Could you look on fb market place or an outlet centre near you?

Fitting is significantly cheaper when you provide the door. Take measurements/ask someone to come and take measurements and then have a look around.

Alternatively have you looked at having a joiner give you a quote?

Go and buy an off-the-peg one from B&Q and get a carpenter to hang it. Paint it yourself.
For example:

B&Q have lots of doors, get a joiner to fit.

find your local wood working yard - joinery shop and have a wood door made, yes a bit of a wait but got mine made for about £700 in tulip wood admittedly which you will need to paint looks fine on my late victorian house,

Loudestcat14 · 14/11/2021 10:56

We got a hardwood one from here and had a local handyman/joiner install it for us. I think with lock, hinges, letterbox and his labour, it came to around £500.

You could always try a price comparison site, something that compares doors from local installers near you - something like www.doubleglazingontheweb.co.uk/ would do

There are quite a few vendors on Ebay that have large stocks of windows and doors that are seconds or left from uncompleted contracts etc.
If it is a standard size you should be able to find one for a reasonable price.
Just check FENSA regs. and ensure the glass is toughened.

get a wooden one, and probably a new wooden frame, fitted by a local carpenter, found by personal recommendation, not an online advert. Who will also know the local door merchants.

Plastic doors, like plastic windows and new kitchens, are often sold at prices unrelated to their cost, because buyers usually have no idea what the price "should" be.

WhatsErFace2020 · 23/12/2021 07:34

@BrilliantBetty if the damage is just on the inner sections you can just buy replace the inner panel. eBay have loads and it changes your whole door. Less work too, could probably do it for 100-150

Jayaywhynot · 23/12/2021 07:39

Don't get a wooden one, I had one, trying to go cheap, they warp and split, I was constantly varnishing it trying to keep the damp out.
I had a local form fit one, nothing fancy, pvc and it cost £600, I was kicking myself when I saw how cheap they were in b&q, I should have bought one from there and got someone to fit it. Have a Google at doors and put a shout out on social media for a carpenter / handyman

There are plenty of hundred year old wooden doors in good working order.

Protection of the top and bottom edges is particularly important and most often neglected.

Varnish is not at durable as paint, but us tolerable in a portch.

Finfintytint · 23/12/2021 08:22

I got a wooden back door at a reclamation yard for £80. You just need to look after it.

PigletInABlanketJohn · 23/12/2021 17:32

for my shed, I got several good-quality hardwood doors on Freecycle and Ebay, cast out by homeowners who had splashed out on plastic replacements.

Some were free, the most I paid was £5

they were all in fine condition and ready to last many more years.

My previous house had a 110-year old Edwardian softwood door, in fine condition. Though it was sheltered by an open porch.
