Same carpets everywhere?

Recently moved to a Victorian terrace and will be replacing the manky carpets in the stairs, landing and 3 bedrooms (wood downstairs). I like the look and feel of plush carpets in the bedrooms, but I like the look of a more textured carpet for the stairs and hall (like this. The textured carpet also seems more hard-wearing and practical for stairs and seems to fit with the Victorian features.

Any thoughts on whether it's better to have the same carpet throughout? Will it look a bit naff having different carpets for the hall and bedrooms? I'd go for a beige/pale grey colour for all, so just the texture would be different.

I've never bought carpets before (made do with existing) so will probably have lots of questions!

I was advised against this as I have turns in the stairs. Apparently it isn’t advisable if you have turns. Also no good for cats, if you have them.

We went with a more boring heather twist for all the bedrooms (we have hard floors downstairs) in the end and I really like it.

I have this is one bedroom and landing (different carpet texture but same colour)....I think I looks fine.....I have sanded original floorboards in the other 2 bedroom though ( 1870s semi)

@WellTidy that's interesting about turns. We only have a small one so should hopefully be ok. But cats could be an issue - we plan on getting one when we're settled in. Old cat would only scratch furniture, not carpets.

Perhaps I need to go and chat to people in the carpet shops to see what they suggest in terms of practicality for the space. All new to me! I plan to steer clear of wool though because of moths.

I'm a big fan of stripe carpet on stairs and landing and plainer in the bedrooms as you will have more stuff in there to bring interest (bed linen, artwork). I've done this in all my houses (20+). Wood downstairs, stripe on stairs and hall, coordinating in bedrooms. You can go with less hardwearing in the bedrooms.
@WellTidy I have no idea what turns have to do with it - a competent carpet layer has no problem with this and I have cats and really don't understand why that's an issue.

PompomDahlia · 11/11/2021 22:30

@maofteens stripes are a no-go for me unfortunately - I suffer from awful migraines and if I'm having an attack then I get horrible vertigo triggered by pattern and walking down stairs. I ruled out a gorgeous herringbone carpet for that reason!

I quite like the look of this actually - slightly tighter weave than the other one for a stair carpet

We have the same all upstairs and on the stairs and landing. It is a squishy pile carpet and 5 years on looks fine

WhatsitWiggle · 11/11/2021 22:40

We've got a textured carpet in the lounge / stairs / hall - you come straight into the lounge from outside and go through to the kitchen so high traffic. It's very hard wearing.

The bedrooms have a mixture of carpets but the best one is a heather, short pile and flecked so dirt doesn't show and it doesn't go streaky when vacuuming. That's been down 8 years and still looks good.

I always advise against patterns on stair coverings. It makes the edges of the treads hard to see. I kept tripping on the stairs here for months because we have inherited huge patterns running across the treads.

I have had different carpets in every room before, to go with the decor etc, ends up looking a bit messy, in my last house I had the same carpet put through every room, the best decision and what I would do again. It saves money and if you go for a neutral shade it goes with every decor. We have recently moved but when we have redecorated the bedrooms I will update the carpets. My worst nightmare would be striped or patterned carpet.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/11/2021 10:39

You need a harder-wearing (more expensive) carpet for high traffic areas like stairs.
Bedroom carpets are much more forgiving.
The info on the back of showroom samples will tell you what they’re good for. Some carpets will come in the same colour, but have different wear ratings.

Absolutely plain, one colour carpet, especially any darker colour, is a nightmare for showing every tiny speck. A dd’s house had a plain dark maroon in the living room - it needed endless hoovering to look nice.
I’d always go for one that’s flecked - it doesn’t have to be very obvious or in your face.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/11/2021 10:40

Oh, and Berber-type can be a headache if you have cats likely to scratch it.

We had this dilemma for our house (small Edwardian terrace). In the end, we opted for the same (cheap synthetic) carpets in bedrooms, painted floorboards with a rug on the landing and a wool runner up the stairs (to avoid noise and slipping). I love how it all looks.

Daisy4569 · 12/11/2021 10:55

We had a hard wearing one similar to what you’re suggesting in he hall, stairs and landing and softer carpets in the bedrooms. Looked lovely and practical for our needs

Henlie · 12/11/2021 11:15

We opted for the same neutral shade loop carpet up the stairs/landing/bedrooms. It’s a wool/synthetic mix suitable for heavy domestic use. Everything flows really well and it still looks great 5 years on. I would definitely do it again.
My top tip would be to opt for the top end underlay - especially on the stairs. It makes such a difference. We put a mid range underlay in the study and one of the bedrooms. Both rooms are used infrequently but the carpet looks a lot more worn than the other rooms.

Sunbeams09 · 12/11/2021 11:35

I’ve moved from a house we renovated which had different colour/texture carpets in hallways compared to rooms, to a house which has the same carpet throughout the whole house, the house is newish so they will most likely be the original carpets that came with the house. Both look fine. If you get the same carpet throughout I would echo the comment from a PP, get a very good quality underlay and the best carpet you can afford, the carpets in this house must be over 10 years old and look fine. We changed one room recently and didn’t need to change the underlay as it is in perfect condition, it is a very good quality underlay. I am very thankful to the previous owners for paying for the good stuff!

I have an Ulster Carpets griege Tartan carpet on the stairs (a runner with silver stair rods) and landing and a matching toned pale greige in all the bedrooms off it. Looks fab.
