Do you decorate for Christmas if your house is on the market in December?

We're about to put our house on the market. With the way things are here, I expect it to sell reasonably quickly, but viewings could easily be happening throughout December.

Do you put up Christmas decorations if there are going to be viewings? Should I put up a wreath but leave it at that?

It's a lovely period house with one of those "Christmas. tree" bay windows, and part of me thinks it would look great showing that off!

But people have very different taste in decorations as well as house decor, and I worry I may be exacerbating that!

The pictures online/in the brochure will be without decorations.

I would love to put them up to keep things normal for the children, they've had a lot of upheaval. I also just love them myself Blush

We got an offer on ours before Christmas, then they pulled out two days afterwards and I was most upset about the fact it meant no one viewed my house whilst it was decorated. I loved that house when decorated and decorated it to suit the style of the house.
So I'd say go for it, as long as it's not overwhelming and it's in keeping with the style. I think a wreath on the door, a tree in the bay window and decorations over a fireplace are all acceptable and not over the top for whilst your house is on the market.
An ex boyfriend of mines mothers house had so many decorations hanging down from the hall ceiling that you had to stoop the whole way along and you couldn't see any light out of the window- something like that I feel would be an issue.

Go for it, I asked someone once how they coped moving on the 23rd, tree was moved fully decorated and dinner was booked for a restaurant nearby.

Absolutely decorate as you normally would.

If you're in the UK, you're not going to complete before Christmas, so I'd assume you're there till after new year.

Silkieschickens · 11/11/2021 10:39

Yes I would put Christmas decorations up as normal, as long as you are not someone who decorates like Blackpool illuminations outside, would see it as a positive or at least neutral thing.

I'm not in the UK but things move at roughly the same pace here.

We definitely wouldn't be physically moving until January at the very earliest.

As long as you don't go really OOT. It can sometimes help people to buy into the dream if they can imagine where their tree might go etc. I wouldn't put it up before December and probably take down fairly quickly. We usually have the tree until 12th night but I would probably in your situation take it down 27th/28th.

theshadeofgreen · 11/11/2021 11:06

Whenever we have moved the question of ' it where would we put the Xmas tree...' has genuinely always cropped up Grin

If it was already up and looked amazing that would be a huge positive for me. Especially as it helps the buyers visualise happy times there!

peppersauce1984 · 11/11/2021 12:32

I would get pictures done before you put decorations up and then keep decorations minimal - tree, wreath , Garland. I wouldn't go OTT as you need people to see a place relatively uncluttered.

RacketeerRalph · 11/11/2021 15:36

Yes, but definitely not for photos. If you get an offer accepted before you'd usually put up Christmas Devs then yes definitely.

careerchangeperhaps · 11/11/2021 19:15

I would (assuming your taste is a pretty standard Christmas tree and not a garish neon affair!).

Constance1 · 11/11/2021 19:46

Yes for viewings but no for photos.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 11/11/2021 22:53

We sold in December a few years back. Once the photos were done the decorations were up! Only a few cards went up though. I told most people not to send them to us!

BarkminsterBlue · 12/11/2021 04:34

Yes, no decorations in photos but I would still decorate for Christmas. Don’t have a big tree unless you genuinely have the space for it though.

sandyN21 · 12/11/2021 05:05

We've just put our house on the market but waited for the photos to be done before putting up the tree. You never know how long your property takes to sell so if you see Christmas decorations in the photos in April potential buyers will be wondering what's wrong with it and why is it taking so long to sell.
