Any ideas on how I can get cheap replacement kitchen doors?

I only have a small kitchen and tbh it needs ripping out and starting again but that is so far from an option. The material covering the doors and drawer facings are starting to peel off. I can't afford to replace them new. They are bog standard B&Q units. I've been looking on FB marketplace and Ebay - people seem to be getting rid of either individual doors or whole kitchens with little in between. I'm wondering if anyone has any great suggestions that I haven't thought of?

What’s underneath the stuff that’s peeling off?

Last year my mums peeled off to reveal simple MDF doors, she sanded them down and painted them. It was a lot of time, sanding/ painting each door a few times, but the results were pretty decent and saved her a fortune.

Or you could get them wrapped?

Don't know op but have a look at DIY kitchen. My magnet quote was about 6 grand and we got what we want Ed for 2.6 grand.

Ideally peel and paint the existing doors, but that's messy.

If that doesn't work, go to B&Q, buy very large sheets of 9mm MDF and get them to cut it into the sizes for all of the doors that you need. Then you can use the existing hinges, handles etc and fit these as new doors. We did this, and it looked pretty modern. We painted a bright colour with satinwood, but you could leave them plain (varnished). The only difficult bit is getting the holes for the hinges. You need a drill with the correct drill bit. If you don't have one, you might be able to hire one cheaply for a few hours from a hire shop.

Other thing you can do is just put doors on the bottom cupboards. Leave the top cupboards with no doors. If you take off the hinges, and paint the back panel of the cupboard a nice colour (or wallpaper it) it looks nice

Thanks for the ideas. I've found someone selling doors that haven't been stuck properly and he's said their fine for repainting underneath. DP disagrees and thinks they are chipboard and I'll wreck them if I try it. I might see if I've got an off cut in the garage that I can take apart, it's been a long time since I've had a root around in there but worth a look!

Fablon?

Sometimes people ask very little for a whole kitchen. I'd consider buying a whole second hand kitchen and taking the units to the dump.

It might be worth getting some quotes for online places or local carpenter to fit MDF doors. I I don't think they will undercut B&Q basic doors but it might be worth a punt.

Also consider buying the very very cheapest new doors, and painting them.

How big is your kitchen OP and how many doors would you need? We used www.kitchenandbedroomdoors.co uk (Homestyle) for wardrobe doors as we needed made to order sizes but they're really reasonable. Can't vouch for kitchen doors but we've had the wardrobe doors for 4+ years and are really happy with them.

I just got mine individually from B&Q. I had 15 doors of varying sizes and the whole lot cost me around £130. White shaker style, added new handles and hey presto. That and some new lino made it look so much better.

PottersParties · 10/11/2021 11:02

How old is the kitchen OP - if you bought it and have a warranty you could get them to replace the doors/cabinets? If I remember correctly it’s 10years at B&Q.

I would try this?

Would take a fair bit of work and paint adds up, but it's probably the cheapest option.
Even if you could get hold of cheap secondhand doors, the sizes/fixing are unlikely to be spot on, so that would take some work anyway

NotMeNoNo · 10/11/2021 11:33

If they are vinyl wrapped they are most likely MDF underneath - it will be a smooth brown looking material rather than chipboard where you can see the "bits".

MDF takes paint quite nicely if you use a durable paint.
If you search online there is loads about removing vinyl coating from MDF doors.

will re painting work on IKEA doors does anyone know please ?or can you buy new ones ?

lovescats3 · 10/11/2021 14:06

what is wrapping ?

I’ve removed a plasticky coating off old peeling doors kitchen cupboard before, with a heat gun it’s fairly quick and painless ( but you do have to be careful of the heat) I then painted then with an undercoat and cupboard paint, and they looked brand new. You can also get companies to spray then, which is less hassle for you but more expensive, although not as expensive as new doors.

sounds like you have vinyl wrap doors. They are cheap but IMO unsuitable for any room that contains a kettle, a toaster, a cooker, a microwave, a coffemaker, a steam iron, a dishwasher, a cat, or a pet's water bowl.

So that rules out kitchens.

You can get standard sizes of doors from numerous factory outlets on ebay.

The most durable are laminate finish (same as a worktop) but they are (almost) invariably slab doors; flat rectangles, which not everybody likes.

SavoyCabbage · 10/11/2021 19:08

If you are on Facebook you could join the Frenchic fan page and then search for kitchen doors. Loads of people have repainted their formally peeling units.

RacketeerRalph · 11/11/2021 15:37

Buy a cheap whole kitchen, take the doors and tip the rest.

RacketeerRalph · 11/11/2021 15:38

Second hand I mean

NotMeNoNo · 12/11/2021 09:21

Wrapping is covering an MDF basic cupboard door with a plastic vinyl/ PVC layer and then it's heated (I think) to shrink/ stick it on and fit smoothly round the corners and details.
This gives you a coloured or woodgrain finish which is reasonably wipe clean but can be prone to peeling up or bubbling if it gets too hot or damp.t

Hi, I have read all of the above comments and in my own kitchen I found the easiest, cleanest & cheapest way is to check out some of the online companies offering these services.

It’s basically a matter of picking your doors, measuring the existing ones and measuring site you need the drill holes. Once your new doors arrive remove the old hinges, screw onto the new doors and clip back onto the units.

Very simple process compared to removing old foil and painting for example.

I used a company called onlinekitchendoors.com for my mothers kitchen as I tried painting my own but was too much hassle and not cost effective. Not too mention a mess all over the kitchen floor😁

Good luck with everything.

Might be worth trying somewhere like Double Glazing on the Web? It's a comparison site for windows and doors, should have kitchen doors on there at pretty low prices! www.doubleglazingontheweb.co.uk/double-glazing-cost/
