Where should I relocate to?

I’m hoping my divorce will finalise soon and give me a lump sum of £200-£300k. I am in my 50’s and after the horrors of an abusive ex and police investigation now want to buy a house with no mortgage. I need 3-4 beds for my kids at Uni to come back to during their holidays. I could move anywhere if needed as my job is in pretty high demand. I love the beach of any description. Where would you move to?

Three questions:
1)Where do you live now (vague area)?
2)Do you prefer rural, a village, town or city?

3)Where are your kids at Uni?

nomorefrogs · 05/11/2021 10:21

I live near Bournemouth now but family are Shropshire based and I’m too isolated down here and can’t afford what I’d like. I really don’t know what I want anymore. I’ve lived in villages, towns and cities and all I can think is I want my own walls and security and a wood burner. Kids are miles apart at Uni from the north east to Cardiff type so I guess being within access to good rail connections would be helpful.

Wales? Cheap property, lush beaches.

QforCucumber · 05/11/2021 10:41

Northumberland/North East - Whitby,Sandend, Runswick, Saltburn - all would get you a 4 bed detached with money to spare.

sarahb083 · 05/11/2021 10:41

Cardiff area? Good rail links, on the coast, fairly close to Shropshire.

DrunkBetch · 05/11/2021 10:59

You can get a decent house in Bolton for around 250k and its got great links to Manchester.

Rainywindoww · 05/11/2021 10:59

I live in Rutland which is lovely. Kind of squashed between Peterborough and Leicester and below Nottingham. Rail links are good.

Oakham is a sweet little town. Here is a 3 bed Victorian Terrace with a log burner in your budget.

Anywhere along the Northumberland coastline. The stretch from Tynemouth to Whitley Bay is beautiful and has a really good community feel and is quite naice.

Further north again even more beautiful but more remote.

bravotango · 05/11/2021 12:56

North of Liverpool, or the Wirral. Or Liverpool itself actually, but it'd take you a bit longer to hit the beach from the city.

Badgertastic · 05/11/2021 13:13

You would get a lovely house in the East Midlands for that money. Close by to Shropshire and the rail links are excellent.

Whitehaven - sea, trains and in budget

Gosh that covers a big area. I need to step outside of the terror of the unknowns and embrace the next stage of my life. I've felt lonely for too long and need to find myself again!

Hastings. Trainline, beach, affordable housing.....

TheCanyon · 05/11/2021 20:09

It's a scary big world out there huh?

What do you like doing?

Beach and rail links are easy, but what about YOU?

My parents are selling their house Grin, it's literally on the beach, train station 15 miles away... It is in Scotland though.

Go for it! The Highlands. Youd have decent property and money for fun.
Leafypage · 06/11/2021 21:24

You can still pick up a 3 bed for 280-300k in Bristol east. Not for much longer though, get in quick!

WhatAWasteOfOranges · 06/11/2021 21:34

Doncaster you can get a house for that and has excellent rail links. Not costal but nice countryside Close by depending on areas

Rutland is lovely, had a great holiday there a few years back. Lucky you living there, enjoy.

potoforchids · 07/11/2021 10:54

You would definitely get that in Northumberland - worth a look.

KirstenBlest · 07/11/2021 13:26

Wrexham area. Fairly central and not far from Shropshire

JustSinginInTheRain · 07/11/2021 13:28

Herefordshire is lovely

MurielSpriggs · 07/11/2021 13:33

You might have to choose between beach and easy connections to different parts of the UK. Inevitably beaches tend to be at dead ends. The best rail connections are going to be in the middle of the country, especially cities.

LozMarieFielder · 07/11/2021 14:20

Clevedon is really nice. Not extremely close to Shropshire but a lot closer than Bournemouth.

MagicalFish · 07/11/2021 15:31

Formby, Merseyside. Beautiful beach, lots of good restaurants etc and very easy reach of Liverpool.

Salome61 · 07/11/2021 21:08

I'd write a list of must haves, nice to haves, and definitely don't wants.

I did this and then got the information from each coastal area I liked the look of - Swanage, Exmouth, Broadstairs, Worthing, etc. Because I wanted my kids to get to me easily, I eventually decided on Exmouth and Broadstairs as they both have good train links.

I was widowed in 2016 and moved up from Twickenham to Northumberland with my late husband in 1999. I wanted to go home to the south, but didn't have enough money. My budget was £240K and when I visited Exmouth and Broadstairs I could only afford the not so nice areas.

I've stayed in Northumberland and would recommend Alnwick to you. Has a bus station, a small hospital, supermarkets, doctors, dentists and vets and the beach is only a five minute drive to Alnmouth, where the railway station links to London or north to Edinburgh/Glasgow. Many downsizers here head for Alnwick as there is a fear that the country buses that visit villages will eventually be stopped.

Really nice people here with lots going on and Newcastle is a forty minute drive with its museums/restaurants/good shops.
