Clitheroe and the forest of bowland

Hi all, we are looking to move up north and have considered areas in Yorkshire but are ow widening our search to lancashire following a visit and realising how beautiful the ribble valley is. I was wondering if anyone has any experience of non-selective schools in this area? Particularly the comp in clitheroe and the high school in forest of bowland?. More generally, what are these areas like to live in? E.g Clitheroe itself or the bowland villages? Many thanks

The non-selective schools aren't great in that are. Ripley and the Grammar schools are good, otherwise there's Carnforth High, or Dallam at Milnthorpe. I have friends in the area and they said that most parents looking at selective schools opt for those. One friend lives in Morecambe and opted for a mixture of Ripley, Dallam and Carnforth rather that the local choices. It is a lovely place to live provided that you are able to be choosy!

If you went closer to Longridge their two high schools are OK.
But if you could travel slightly further, Broughton High is very good.
It might be worth contacting the high schools to see where they run buses from. I’m always surprised at how far people are prepared to travel.

Beautiful part of the world.

Isn’t Clitheroe Grammar a good school?

An excellent school, but selective (or at least always used to be)

Of the two schools you refer to, I’d want my child to go to Bowland High school. Be aware that living in Clitheroe might not secure a place - friends of mine do and they didn’t get their son in. It would be best to be in one of the villages on that side of Clitheroe.
Clitheroe itself is now swamped with new builds if that’s your thing. The surrounding villages would be my preference.
Fantastic walking everywhere and a real foody place with great pubs and restaurants.

Sad to hear it’s swamped with new builds.

Thats for all your comments, not sounding too positive for that area which is good to know. Shame though, skipton would also be well located for us but worried about the school system as I don't think grammars would be the right school for my kids or feel they would get in anyway. Ilkley also fab but SO expensive!

Hi all, we have been considering a few places up north to move to and have planned to come up in December. So far on our list we have holmfirth and also wanted to see if there are any more views on clitheroe at all? We have read mixed reviews about more than average teenage drug use, not much nearby to do but wanted to check as everything else about the area seems promising. Thanks!

We’ve lived in Clitheroe for close to 40 years now. It is still a nice place, but has changed drastically in the last 10 years or so as far as development and infrastructure are concerned - there are far too many new housing estates off roads which are unavoidable bottlenecks, so traffic in and out can be dire at peak times. (If you come here to look at houses, avoid Henthorn Road and Waddington Rd!)

The villages are popular but for me their access roads rule most of them out - single-lane bridges with poor sight lines, or very narrow roads/tight bends. I always get twitchy if I just have to drive to one of them; I’d have a nervous breakdown if I lived there!

My kids are grown up and have left so I don’t know much about teenage activities. I have heard about drugs being an issue here but couldn’t say if it’s any worse than anywhere else, or if people make a fuss because it’s worse than it used to be. There does seem to be a rougher element now too - more vandalism, which is sad. I think it is true that (outside sport) there isn’t much organised activity for them.

I can’t comment on the secondary schools these days either, but both Ribblesdale and Bowland have good reputations, and have always had much better pastoral care than CRGS. (There’s also St Augustine’s in Billington, which is RC but does take some non-Catholics if there are spare places.)

Housing here is actually much less expensive than both Ilkley & Holmfirth, going by a quick look on rightmove. (Houses away from the bottlenecks get snapped up though.) Train service to Manchester is pretty good, and you can also access trains going to Yorkshire if you change lines at a station further down (I never get trains but DH does)

As you said, Ribble Valley is very beautiful. And nowhere is perfect! So definitely come and check it out Smile
