Anyone successfully replaced a conservatory?

We will be remortgaging next year so it seems like a sensible time to sort out our old conservatory which is freezing in winter & boiling in summer. I really want to turn it into a useable space.

Currently it opens out into our dining room through wooden double internal doors. The walls are brick built to about 1 m high, the rest is glazed and it has patio doors on one side which bizarrely, open out onto the side path/fence.

I would like to make the dining room/conservatory one large space with bifolds that open onto the garden.
I'm not sure what the best option would be - replace the roof/put underfloor heating in and move the doors...Basically just improve what is there or knock it down and start again with an extension?

Has anyone done similar?
Can you give me a rough idea of costs for either? I don't think we'll be able to stretch to much beyond £30-40k
Thank you!

How big is the space?

Your costs and options will be determined by your current foundations. If your foundations are 1m per building regulations, you could build off the current foundations with any roof of your choice, new bifold doors, and raise the wall heights on either side. This should cost about £25k max for a space of c15sqm (including fees for building control, structural engineers, cost of knocking through to create open plan etc)

If you have shallow foundations, you will be limited to a tiled conservatory roof, which are quite expensive. Think c£10k for just the roof alone. Then maybe another £4k for the bifolds. Then a few more £k to create a new opening for the bifolds and make good the other area where the doors were. It quickly adds up...

Thanks @prenupna I think it's about 4mx4m so approx 16m2.
I have no idea if it has proper foundations as it was installed by the previous owners. Hopefully someone would be able to tell us!

We replaced ours in our last house. Put in proper French doors to seal it off that folded back out of site. If I were doing it now and intending on staying, I would probably extend. Cost between 2 was enormous when we looked

Ask me in five weeks Grin Work on ours just started today. We're replacing the shitty plastic roof with tiles, the floor (tiles) with engineered wood, replacing the walls - so smaller windows and bigger radiators, and replacing the downstairs loo. Also spotlights and one skylight. We've been quoted 16-17k, not including things like flooring and bathroom stuff. I'll post photos of it later, when the builders have gone home, and more photos of the finished product.

That sounds great JesusInTheCabbageVan
Sorry if this is a daft question but what sort of tiles do they put on the roof?

Not daft at all! They're called fibre slate - fake slate basically, as real slate is too pricey.

@JesusInTheCabbageVan I don’t suppose you could share the After pics here? We’ve got an old conservatory like yours and looking to replace it now…

We replaced our conservatory with modern windows and doors and a glass roof to replace the plastic. Cost was around £9k. But it was exactly "like for like", i.e. door in same place etc, so no building, just the plastics and glass. It's made a massive difference, now useable all year round. Modern glass in windows and roof is a game changer compared with the old materials.

I had completely forgotten about this thread... was about to post saying 'We did!' then spotted myself on here. Anyway it went very well and was well worth the money. I think it was about 18k in the end. It's still not massively warm in winter, but much better than it was (the old one was quite frankly an embarrassment).
